Watched the Stonehaven location one last night.
HTF could that multicoloured mess be in the top 3, ahead of the likes of that charcoal one and a few of the others. In fact all of the others. Even the original submission was just a mess of colour.

Art is 'all in the eye of the beholder' and all that. But I'm inclined to agree with you. Many times my wife & I will look at each other and go "really!" Its the same with Portrait Artist. Often the one that looks nothing like the sitter is chosen.

Incidentally, our neighbours were one of the wildcards, but not seen them to ask how they went about getting a place.

It's always been the way, I remember watching watercolour challenge with Hannah Gordon years ago and faced with two really good works and something oddball the judges would always pick the oddball one. I tend to watch the programmes now to see the different approaches and techniques used but not worry too much about the judging.

I've seen similar in photographic competitions too, where its easier for the judge to pick something 'different'.

I always like the ones that look like the subject. Trouble is, the judges always hate them.

I know two very successful artists, who charge a lot for their work. Good luck to them, but bloody hell why can't they at least give us a clue as to what we are looking at.

Obviously I know nothing. Tracey Emin didn't even make her bed and made a fortune.

Agree with the previous comments. My wife and I select the winner right at the start, and are usually correct using the "scientific measure" of which submission looks nothing like any of the others! Being able to accurately reflect the subject matter seems very low on the judges criteria. I am clearly useless at judging art and have yet to master the garbage "arty speak" that the judges are so fluent in, I love "mark making"!!! surely every time you touch the canvas you are making a mark!!
