I have had BT TV for years. It's basically a custom Humax PVR, with subscription channels as well as Freeview.

These boxes have always been a bit flaky, needing a factory reset (losing all the recordings) to solve various lockups if the HDD gets anywhere close to being full. I've had 3 replacements over the years, and they all do the same thing.

I tried to get the box replaced again, got the runaround from EE (new branding for the BT TV service), and got talked into a new contract. 3 goes at placing an order, lies, worse serv8ce, possibility of losing landline number, etc.
I have cancelled anything offered by EE, and am back on my old BT broadband/phone/TV contract.

During my last phone call, I asked what they were going to do to sort out my dodgy TV box, and they said I should just use the new boxes that they had ordered as part of the cancelled EE contract.


Today I received an EE Apple TV box and an EE Mini box, along with a prepaid bag to return my old BT Humax PVR.

This is where I'm getting confused. Neither of the new boxes seem to be capable of acting as a PVR. The Apple box seems to use catch up services, rather than showing proper live TV. I'm guessing the Mini Box works the same way, as it doesn't have an aerial socket.

It seems that if I keep the new kit and return the old box, I'm losing the ability to record?

What's the point of the Apple and Mini boxes?

I already have a smart TV and an Nvidia Shield streamer (Netflix, Prime, and Plex from my Synology). The only reason I had BT TV was to get a PVR and access to a few subscription channels.
With the new kit, I'm losing functionality and seemingly gaining nothing useful.

Yes. You need the EE TV Box Pro to be able to record - www.bt.com/help/tv/learn-about-tv/bt-tv-boxes

I phoned BT/EE, and they are sending me another box, same model as my dodgy one (4k Humax).

While waiting for the new BT 4k box, I tried a factory reset. That worked.

I've now fitted the new box, sending back the Apple, Mini, and my older spare 4k box that died a few years ago. The one that froze is now a spare.

Mum was having similar problems with her BT box - unable to record, all existing recordings vanished. EE made her sign up for a new contract and sent her a Pro box.
I suggested that she try the factory reset, and her box is now working too.
She has cancelled the new contract.

Shame that the EE help desk didn't suggest just trying a factory reset during the first phone call.
