I think a lot depends on the other type of content you consume, as the poster above points, you’re more likely to know them if you watch reality TV.
Mrs DG and I both enjoy ‘Gogglebox’ yes I know its rubbish, but can be very funny rubbish; the celebrity version, not amusing, despite what the participants may think.
We watch ‘Gogglebox’ to get an idea of what we might like to view/not view, we plan what we watch, rather than sitting in front of the television and watching it, I also don’t have a clue who most of them are.
Other threads “Noteworthy deaths” “Guess whose aged” often I have no idea, who the people are, and have to do a search; no I’m not trying to score “I’m cool points” I just don’t know who they are.

Noteworthy Deaths got changed by some posters who decided it shouldn’t just be celebs but anyone they think is important.It’s turned in to a typical PH thread “What do you mean you’ve never heard of Herbert “Erbie” Fotherington-Pillocky? You must be inferior to me”.

I stopped watching the normal Gogglebox a few seasons ago and only watch the celebrity one. The season that was just on was pretty good.
