Channel 4 no longer smart

Spent ages rebooting our TV and deleting and adding apps, to discover our ancient flat screen no longer supports Channel 4 smart streaming.

We lost ITVX a while ago, but it appears that Channel 4 and My 5 have also gone.

I guess we can get a Roku stick or bite the bullet and buy a new TV.

Happened on my 10 year old Panasonic which is now in the bedroom.

Whatever streaming addon you buy, I would recommend one that has other functionality on the remote so you only need to use one remote. I chose a Roku 4k stick because it can turn the tv on and off, and control the volume as well. I now never have to see the old Panasonic UI.

Richer Sounds have a sale on so would be a good start for a new TV. Using an external stick is cheaper though & easier to change/upgrade in the future.

I just got an Amazon Firestick for £5 off FB and plugged it into my 10-ish year old Samsung. Gives me all the apps i need, and I don't need all the 4K/Dolby etc stuff.

Basically the same for me with a Sony of a similar age. But every so often I get a random flickering of the picture when it switches on. That is easily cleared by the traditional switching it off and on again but annoying if I've recorded a programme whilst not there.

This is why you just buy an external streaming box and use that. Smart TVs never get decent support for the apps and are often rubbish to begin with.

Even the cheap dongle type ones generally have better and longer lasting support and you can upgrade them really cheaply if they do go out of date. Switch over to either a Chromecast w/Google TV or a Firestick is my advice.

I don't understand why after 15 years of the BBC iplayer (pretty much perfect from the start), the rise of Netflix (plus other services), along with young people almost exclusively streaming Channel 4 and ITV still have slow, cumbersome, buffering platforms.

£20 Firestick will be fast enough and have everything you need. We did it when they were on offer for both the kid's TVs.
