….social media killed the video star?
So MTV is closing the European channels from January.
I’ll admit I haven’t really watched it for a few years, but still find myself stopping on the actual video channel when hopping and seeing something I like.
I remember well the precursor to MTV - as a child there was a company called Rediffusion who my parents rented the tv from.
Their depot was at the back of our garden in Nottingham and one day some rather large ground fixed satellite dishes appeared.
We were given Cable tv on a years free trial as a tester (ended up with it for 3-4 years as it happened) and my abiding memories are of watching the first MTV - Music Box.
I believe it was actually German but broadcast throughout Europe via cable.
Just back to back music videos with little inane chat and no ‘awards’ ceremonies or ‘Pimp my Rides’..
Was around 1983/ 1984 and every time I hear Bronksi Beat ‘Small Town Boy’ (and the slightly depressing video) it takes me back to teenage angst and a country in the depth of recession and high unemployment..
Anyway…music video tv is being killed off, but video didn’t actually kill the radio star and it still shines.
What will kill off social media,?
