Apparently Damnation Alley was meant to be one of the big films of 1977 until a certain 'B-movie' obliterated everything that year. Being curious here, but did it ever really stand a chance? If Star Wars had been a year later, or not even made, would D.A. have been a hit or was it (like many 1970s films) irredeemably st?

Went to see this with my dad when I was 9.

I spent the next year trying to make the vehicles out of LEGO !

As a teen I took great interest in the Damnation Alley movie as I was a huge Roger Zelazny fan and at the time I was consuming the Nine Princes In Amber series of novels as it was being produced to eventually become the Amber Chronicles. I was desperate for a movie adaptation of Nine Princes In Amber but the poor performance of Damnation Alley probably killed that.

"Then he leaned forward and whispered to me, Your eyes have looked
upon the fairest sight they will ever hold... Guards! Take Corwin away to the
smithy, and let his eyes be burnt from out his head! Let him remember the
sights of this day as the last he might ever see! Then cast him into the
darkness of the deepest dungeon beneath Amber, and let his name be
forgotten!"
