Well it seems like Jan 16th is D-day for ST:A, and since there doesn't seem to be an existing thread here we are.

There are a few trailers floating around which I've dropped below - but I have to say that I'm not hopeful at this point frown I mean that (as with the appropriately named ST: D) it looks wonderful and glossy, however this really does (again) seem to be aimed at the 'teen-drama' end of the demographic and (despite some good actors) not a lot for the likes of me.

I will be watching when it comes out but...

Oh dear.

I take it Doc is Doc and not some other random character? And the engineer woman from somewhere or other (Discovery?) is also resuming that character? A character with "super powers" is depressing, I want to watch Star Trek not Vampires (or alternative supernatural being) in Space.

I'll watch it, but will probably be hitting Andor quite hard afterwards to feel clean again.

I've been rewatching the older Star Trek series. Next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager.

The stronger episodes from more recent series barely reached the level of poorer old Star Trek episodes. For me at least, Star Trek has always been about dealing with moral dilemmas and no win situations which make you think about each episode and relate it to real life situations. Discovery was better for this than Strange New Worlds, which has had too many silly episodes. However, "The Burn" was a silly concept and it went too far with the touchy, feely stuff to try and be modern. Getting into ghosts and spiritualism was also weird as Star Trek has always had some footing in real science. The trouble is, this stuff has been introduced as part of the storyline and there's no going back on it.

We could perhaps start by getting the title right- it is 'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy', or ST:SA.

But despite having really taken to ST:SNW, I will be passing on this- absolutely nothing that I've seen of it has interested me at all!

Critical Drinker has done a cromulent 6 minute review.
He's not exactly looking forward to it.
I think it looks utter dog st and will be joining the execrable Discovery and the only marginally better Strange NW in the pile of toss that is modern Star Trek

Rubbish. Discovery is an aberration I don't even consider as being Star Trek.
I will give Academy a chance though.

A new little teaser:

On the one hand, it's interesting they're using so much of Sisko to promote this given Avery's never been interested in coming back. I can only assume that either a) he's changed his mind (unlikely) or b) they saw the fan complaints that he was being overlooked a bit with this new era of Trek and are dropping nods in to appease fans (likely).

I also think that either all this reference to the past is just for the promos and trailers, or they'll use it as a core theme throughout. I hope the latter but fear it may be the former.

Either way I'll be watching, whilst I didn't love all of DISCO there were more than enough good bits to keep me entertained.

I remember friends in the USA sending me VHS tapes of TNG before it was shown in the UK, so I'm looking forward to this. People of a certain age will recognise all the acronyms. TTFN!

So media outlets seem to have gotten the first 6 episodes to watch, having listened to a few thoughts (from people that have actually seen it) it sounds like it's pretty good. The first episode especially is getting lots of praise.

Doesn't sound like a teen drama either (possibly a positive or negative depending on what you hoped for), with a few people who were worried it would be pleasantly surprised it's not.

4 days to go!

Just found this thread. Not impressed 30 mins in. Clearly a star wars style "action scene"
I will try the 2 free episodes online. But my hopes are so low.

well I've struggled through episode 1 and have to say that I am, sadly far from impressed - as much as I ended up disliking STD I did hold out some hope to begin with. This... not so much frown

Jury’s out. Obviously being so far in the future they can pretty much do what they like, and it seems they’re doing just that (Female Jem’Hadar Klingon?). They took the obvious route with the ageing doctor. And did it sound like he had a lisp to anyone else?

Nice having some new trek to watch, don’t think this is going to hook me but we’ll see.

Finding it hard to see anything positive about it so far, other than the doctor.

Doctor wasn't the only one that sounded like they had a lisp, the captain was painful to listen to, and the first officer seems to have a slight lisp as well.

As for the way the captain sits in the chair rolleyes

You know the chair thing didn't annoy me . I'm guessing super experienced long term (seeing as she's what 500 years old?) Experienced officer.

But the cadets are just an annoying mix of idiots you wouldn't trust as an asda trolly boy.

The whole "burn" ( I had to look it up) and ammount of time passed allows them to pretty much do whatever they want and dismisses most of the trek we love. Its just trek in name.

Holly Hunter is also the voice of Mrs Incredible. She always had a unique voice but either the Doctor developed a new subroutine or the sound is a bit off

I will add Enterprise to your list. I stopped watching the series after that.

I often wonder how many sad, joyless people are out in the world and then I come on PH and realise they’re all here.

Just watched Ep1 and it was just good fun to watch! Definitely Star Trek, bit of humour, fight scenes, science macguffins, and Paul freaking Giamatti stealing every scene he was in.

I do agree that this time period isn’t very good for regular ST though, the level of tech is basically anything can do anything. Hopefully this focuses on different aspects. Like the idea that it’ll be set on Earth with occasional space missions too.

TL:DR - cheer up eh?
