Recently on PBS America (Sky TV).
Ken Burns 9 part documentary on the American Civil War.
Fascinating, put together with rescued photos, diaries, letters home etc

I remember watching it on the BBC many years ago, caught it by accident and was hooked despite having no particular interest in the subject.

Personal private letters and diaries by soldiers and civilians are as important to the narrative as the official war records. Literacy in the north in the 1860s was 80-90% for white adults and 70% for the southern states.

The Ashokan Farewell theme is great too, fairly easy to play on the guitar if you are a novice.

Somewhat the same, recorded Part 1 and just kept going. Learnt a lot about a subject I knew very little of.
