New sitcom written and directed by Mackenzie Crook.

Set in and around Manchester, it stars Pearce Quigley as a man who turns to alchemy and homunculi in an attempt to learn what happened after his girlfriend disappeared, with the cast also including Crook, Sir Michael Palin, Lauren Patel, Sophie Willan and Jon Pointing.

Just seen this advertised, seems to have a similar vibe to Detectorists which is one of my favourite TV programs of all time. Really looking forward to it.

Plus Michael Palin stars, my national treasure

The whole of S01 is live on iPlayer now. I'll check out the first episode later.

It’s very good and very Detectorists. I love Quigley’s character’s oddness and bullst stories.

We watched the first one tonight and I think anyone who liked Detectorists is in for a treat with this.

Three episodes tonight and I’m enjoying it. I had unfairly high hopes for it.

I watched the first two and whilst I don’t think it’ll quite hit the (very high) mark of Detectorists, I enjoyed them very much.

I've seen a 3 minute clip on YouTube - the one where he's explaining to the customer about the risks of a new colour being invented.

I watched 1 episode of The Detectorists and felt it was over-hyped and weak but just watching that one clip of SP makes me want to watch both now if that clip is representative of the writing.

I'm a sitcom addict and Detectorists is All-Time Top 5 for me. I'd encourage you to give it another try.

I've watched the first two and am really into it. Best not to expect that many out-loud laughs though. I'm watching it more for the story and mystery.

Just adding that it is "a story" though so each episode needs to be seen in order.

I watched the first episode and loved it. Very detectorists in tone. The joke with the brazil nuts is an old one, but still a good one.

I'm glad you reminded me. I think I heard that one about 50 years ago.

Some of the interactions feel a little off (it just seemed to flow so easily in The Detectorists) but otherwise, easy to see the same vibe and nice of MK to take a less prominent role.

I am warming to it but given the nature of the story I wonder if it can have the same legs as The Detectorists? Even it stopped before a large (golden) hoard was found. Although the cup was a great plot twist.

I like the fella next door character played by Jon Pointing who I recognise from Big Boys. I like the way tries to stay polite with his neighbour who he clearly finds really annoying.

Personally, I think the program would be better without the silly jokes, they cheapen it a bit. However, I still enjoyed it smile

I started the The Detectorists thread before watching the first episode, then whilst watching it I thought “what have I done, it’s pretty poor!”.

It really is a grower though, stick with it, you’ll be glad you did.
