On BBC i Player at the moment is the wonderful 1976 Mike Leigh play "Nuts in May" set in Dorset. around Corfe Castle, starring Roger Sloman and Alison Steadman. I first saw this fifty years ago, and must have seen it ten times since. Highly recommended if you have never seen it.

I love this film so much it’s just so funny.
I might watch it again this evening, not my 10th time but maybe the 5th.
For more camping related comedy I highly recommend seeking out the 2016 TV series Camping by Julia Davis.

We used to watch this when I was a kid, loved it. Learnt the “I want to go the Zoo” song off by heart.
Dad, brother and I still use a few sayings from the film when we talk.
As a matter of fact a couple of years ago we went camping in the same campsite that it is filmed in and tried to work out where they pitched up.
“Yes but Keith….”

Always remember to chew everything seventy two times and start off the day with The Royal Canadian air force exercise routine, and kiss Prudence before you go to bed. smile

That is brilliant.... I love Julia Davis and camping was just so excruciating and delightful to watch. Washing out mother's pants on the line was a highlight.

I think this is the time I first fell in love with Alison Steadman, what she saw in that baldy hippy drip we'll never know.

Whenever I watch this I cringe/hate/love Ray having to join in.

Utterly brilliant stuff. Might look slightly tame now but it was miles ahead of its time.

Abigail followed!

I watched this when I was a teenager as my Dad said it was good.

I may need to introduce my teenagers to it.

They at be a bit confused by it starring a very young Pamela from Gavin & Stacey/grandma from Here We Go.

I love everything by Mike Leigh but must admit that Keith (Sloman) does almost have me hiding behind a cushion sometimes.

Leigh does seem to be really good at that sort of awkward stuff and his first film, Bleak Moments has a great scene where the camera goes from face to face in a room with nobody actually saying anything. It's a completely different sort of awkwardness though.

It's absolutely fascinating to see how Leigh makes the films and there is also a documentary on iPlayer about that.

Any actor that's in any Mike Leigh film goes straight to the top of the class as far as I'm concerned.

I always thought Sightseers was a slightly more violent remake. Should have kept the original title.

Sightseers is another classic, with some great locations, from Crich tramway museum to Ribblehead Viaduct and Castlerigg stone circle.

Proper black comedy.

I've not seen that - will have to look it up if it's a similar comedy.

I rewatched this last night (I must have first seen it in the early 80's as a teenager). It's good in parts but there's a paper-thin story and some of the scenes don't really serve the story at all. Still great though.

I've retconned Ray to be an earlier incarnation of Mammoth. Welsh, PE teacher, moustache etc. All that's missing is the Capri hehe

Watched it the other night, as it's not something I'd seen before.

Hmmm! Not too sure really, the odd laugh but far more cringes.

Mike Leigh specialises in cringes, see also Abigail's Party.

Trivia:-

The motorbike couple "Finger" and "Honky" were married in real life and their son is an actor who appeared in 28 days later.
