That was a very good start to the new series as they started in my favourite country, Italy. A lot of the places they went to I had been there also. Interesting mix of contestants. I feel the two young Scouse lads may struggle due their inexperience. I think the father and daughter from Northern Ireland will do well, especially with him being a geography teacher. The brother and sister may struggle to manage their budget I reckon but they seem to be ultra competitive. The brother and sister in law look to me to be out there to enjoy themselves and soak up the experience. Looking forward to the forthcoming episodes.

Yet again, not filmed in UHD, which I find staggering given that's it's a travel show about amazing places and they make so much effort with the cinematic shots.
Also no "older" couples and no married couples (or at least ones in a relationship with each other). Given the box-ticking of previous series' contestants, this must be deliberate.

Me and my mum applied for this series - I blame her audition tape for the reason we didn't get selected, not the fact we're pretty ordinary northerners with no spicy back story.
It's a route and destination I'd love to do, travelling through areas that I'm fascinated by so I can't wait for the later episodes.
Coincidentally we were visiting family in Palermo around the time they were filming the start.

Talked about this with my wife yesterday, its all retired people or young and not in the work place yet. If you married with a career and mortgage going away for up to 3 months isn't really an option. Especially with such a tiny prize at the endMade the comment to Mrs Race as this started...

Up comes the route map....that's a bit close to Iraq, Iran, etc.....but I'm guessing it was filmed a while before the current 'issues'.

That would be it for an awful lot of people. Doubtless there's loads of time spent on selection and preparation as well as the event proper which is roughly 2 months. Overall, potentially nearly 3 months not earning across 2 wages, for the -chance- of a £20k prize. It's a poor gamble, and a lot of the outcome is pure dumb luck - bus A breaks down and bus B doesn't, etc.(rough maths below)
Min wage post-tax - £2106, x3, x2 = £12,636 and many people earn much more.
Maximum prize for a working couple = £7364, so £3682 each for giving up that time, and barring a handful of nights you're roughing it every step of the way.
It's getting like The Apprentice, the prize just isn't big enough in today's money.

At the beginning of the first episode they said they were following the Old Silk Road. So I think a fair bit of transiting through the "Stans". I really enjoyed last night's episode. The Greek scenery was stunning and the In laws got to see the Meteora Monasteries. The island hopping looked fun too. Always fancied visiting Greece. Would like to visit Hydra and Athens at some point.

It was noticeable that on their previous attempt to find work, everyone (unsurprisingly) refused them. Whether that strategy would be more successful after they’re out of Europe and into some of the central Asian countries is a different question.Harrison & Katie seemed to have a decent strategy of working as much as possible while they’re still in Europe, though how they managed that while still staying in the lead is a bit of a mystery, they must either have been short jobs or they were travelling all night on more than one occasion.
With an elimination in the next one, I can see Jo & Kush throwing money at some long taxi dashes then running out of money soon afterwards.
