I watched it on sat night, must admit it was actually a pretty good film, certainly worth watching.
It is 2 hours long though...

Saw it in December in the USA

I absolutely loved it and it is much, much better than the advertising & marketing that has been produced to promote it. Here's a review I wrote somewhere else:

PKM elsewhere said:
I saw Slumdog Millionaire last week - it made such an impression I thought I'd write a review - think it's out here Jan 09. Make SURE you see this film. See it on the big screen. Don't wait for DVD, you won't be disappointed.

You're going to hear a lot about this film in the coming months - it's outstanding. It's going to be my "best film ever" now. I would not be surprised at all if it picks up some major awards.

From the opening scene you'll be captivated, not just by the sound, which was recorded on location in Mumbai, as was the entire film, but the also framing of the image and the tightly woven narrative make this a winner on all aspects.

It's beatifully filmed, its raw, it's edgy from the first second, the story is unfolded to you in an unusual style, the significance of each sequence is locked with the narrative, it's immensly evocative, you'll feel like you're in India - the lengths Danny Boyle went to capture the essence of Mumbai paid dividends.., it's tragic, the characters are robust and and is emotionally moving ....its, well, everything you could want and expect from a movie.... it is pretty much Hollywood Disney studio-nausea free.

Dev Patel is the outstanding star of this movie but you won't be able to tear your eyes away from the beauiful Freida Pinto
Trailer and Anil Kapoor leaves you feeling a tad uneasy. Movie Trailer

Bonus points go to the soundtrack - due out on Dec 23...

5. Paper Planes DFA REMIX - M.I.A.
6. Ringa Ringa - A R Rahman featuring Alka Yagnik & Ila Arun
7. Liquid Dance - A R Rahman featuring Palakkad Sriram & Madhumitha
8. Latika's Theme - A R Rahman featuring Suzanne
9. Aaj Ki Raat - Sonu Nigam, Mahalaxmi Lyer & Alisha Chinoi
10. Millionaire - A R Rahman featuring Madhumitha
11. Gangsta Blues - A R Rahman featuring BlaaZe & Tanvi Shah
12. Dreams on Fire - A R Rahman featuring Suzzanne
13. Jai Ho - A R Rahman featuring Sukhvinder Singh, Tanvi Shah & Mahalaxmi Iyer

The majority of the film is about the harsh, violent and cruel life and the growing up of two orphaned brothers in the slums of India and their fight or die existence - the gang bosses who rule the begging and prostitution rackets and the corrupt police and authorities. The story hinges on an unusual plotline referring to Millionaire and it is told retrospectively.

Brilliant.

Someone else said it was great as well, looks like I'm going to have to see it.

Seven Pounds which is also on at the cinema at the minute is also great.

Watched it on Saturday just to see what all the hype is about and, for a change, it was actually better than the hype. It's just over two hours long but doesn't feel it; it's just one of those movies that seems to make time disappear really quickly.

Casting was top notch and once you're over the initial "z0mg! It's Anwar!" thing, you can really start to enjoy it. Excellent screenplay, convincing direction and damn good photography.

It has the excellence of a modern Stand By Me. Everyone should watch it smile

Don't judge a book by it's cover.... the promos for this movie have not done it justice. It looks like a 'sweet' little love story about simply winning millionaire to win the girl and it's far, far grittier than that...

What he said.

There's far too much depth and gritty story in it for it to be considered a chick-flick.

Looking forward to seeing this.

I shall avoid Seven Pounds at the cinema though. The trailer has the words "Contains Highly Emotive Scenes" or something like that, and due to the copious amount of drugs I am taking at the moment (after a heart attack), I will currently sob uncontrollably at Lassie, so I shall not risk embarrassing all in the theatre for the time being!

I'm thinking the same thing but I will go give it a watch. I often don't agree with hardened film critics on a lot of films.

For example, I go to watch a film to enjoy it and will often gloss over mistakes/flaws in films where as film critics always seem to look out for these errors and will mark down reviews based on some small errors which the average film watcher will ignore or not even consider. So a well filmed, zero flawed original film will always be well received by film critics who watch dozens of films at a time.

It's not going to be to everyones taste, just like a bestseller book or album of the year, however, it IS different. I like different.

It's not yet another disaster movie or a nauseating wedding/best freind/husband/wife genre.

I am slightly biased because my sister was the 1st Asst Ed on this film so I obviously heard a lot about it during filming and production... specifically the lengths Danny Boyle went to capture the sights and sounds of Mumbai, studio animations and special effects sound / visual are not what this film is made of!

I watched it a week or two ago, and I really enjoyed it. From an Indian Movie perspective, it was an 'Arty' modern love story. There were quite a couple 'famous' Indian Actors in the Movie - Anil Kapoor, the Millionaire host, is/was one of India's A-List actors - and did a good performance. The Police Inspector is in a lot of movies these days - often playing a hardend emotionally - detached character, usually in the Police. The soundtrack is A.R. Rehman who is by far the best Indian music Composer/Producer, often working with Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Certainly being able to understand the non-english bits and the cultural elements meant I really really loved it, but even if you don't its still a good movie.

The trailers made me cringe, if I had seen them first I might not have gone to see it, I went in early December before the promos had reached the UK, mainly because my sis had worked on it and told me a lot about it.... I am really glad I hadn't seen the previews and formed an opinion before seeing it too! the plot has been sanitised in order to sell to mainstream audiences. My sister hates the ads for it and doesn't feel they do anything for it at all. Check it out. You can always walk out (like I did) during Quantum of st. But you should give it a go if you like Danny Boyle's work. I never noticed the 2hr run time.
