anyone seen it, what did you think?

i found it quite enjoyable for a recent hanks film. the script was very good in parts, the dialogue was spot on.

2 thing spoiled it - the last ten mins, and the special effects supervisor. worst SFX i've seen since the 80's - every shot featuring the russian hind helicopter made me cringe. hanks & julia roberts must've swallowed the budget!

Petty good film ,must be said it kind of shows how the US fails to see the uprising of Islam in its race to get one over the Russians and the failure to help rebuild leads on to the mess we/they have over there now.

I think you have missed the point here even though you have mentioned it in your post.....

.....the FX were deliberately made to look like they were done in the 80's.

It was meant to show the contrasting styles, parts were the Hinds were winning were doing well were like Russian propaganda films from the day with the grainy poor coloured film. And the parts were the Hinds were evil were like something straight out of Top Gun (cheesy dialogue, 80's graphics). Showing the too different ideaologies meeting.

I thought these bits added a great deal of atmoshere to the film and were spot on. Even saw a documentary about how the film makers made there FX dept go back to 80's techniques like blowing-up little model Mil-24 Hinds to get shots they needed.

didn't realise the FX were supposed to be bad. i don't know why though, it added nothing for me, and little else was done to give the film a "made in the 80's" feel.

Good movie. But made me finally realize that Julia Roberts isn't very good except in that Erin Broccoli thing, and that's it. (Pretty Woman does not count - she did not act, she just read the script).

Tom Hanks and Philip Seymore Hoffman work really well together in this film.

The scene where Hanks knows his office has been bugged but cant figure out how Hoffman did it is fantastic.
