The budget doesn't look great, Hal is played by a Henry vacuum cleaner.

Given that expensive sci-fi films these days are always hopeless the fact that this was made with a small budget makes it look promising.

That is very true. The first Jaws was the best, because they couldn't get the shark to work, also the first Star wars was the best because of Lucas not being able to put in all the extra crap he shoved in latter.

Known about this film for a while now, been looking forward to it.

These small budget flicks always seem to be the best!

Looks good. Special effects look fine to me - it looks like the moon should.

Shades of "2001", "Space 1999", "Dark Star" and "Silent Running" me thinks.

Bit of trivia, the start budget for the film was a mere $2 million and Duncan Jones the director is David Bowies son, looks like it will be worth a watch thumbup

At least they used scale models for the majority of the moon scenes rather than CGI.

If you look at the first alien films, 99% of those movies looked great because they used scale modelling rather than CGI and still look very fresh today

Went to see this last night. The verdict? Bloody marvellous; a really enjoyable film.

It has echoes of many sci-fi greats: There are bits of 2001, Alien, Blade Runner, Silent Running, Soylent Green and a masterful performance from Sam Rockwell.

Went down the Vue Cinema at Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth to see it and the whole place was absolutely heaving given the release of HP6 but once past the huddled masses and into the auditorium, there were only about a dozen people in there and two of those left about half an hour into the film. I assume that it wasn't what they expected.

Anyway, a real gem and worth a trip.

Saw this yesterday too, similar experience & verdict, had the place almost to ourselves.

Really nice film, nice that it used models instead of crappy CGI. The only thing that annoyed me was the music score, it was supposed to convey isolation and loneliness which made the up-tempo music seem out of place.

Yes, so much more atmospheric. Just because you *can* use CGI, it doesn't mean that you should. The models had a hint of SHADO about them too. smile

I can't say that I noticed the background music really. Isn't that the way it's supposed to be? If you notice it, surely it's doing the wrong job?

Yes, Duncan Jones was originally Christened Zowie Bowie.

As his dad's real surname is Jones he has opted for the sensible alternative.

Parents - who'd have'em?

Can't imagine why he'd want to change his name......did Moonunit Zappa change hers...and her brother Dweezel?

Dweezil used to provide the voice for Ajax, the surfer dude son in "Duckman" - I really liked Duckman.
