Griff Rhys Jones yesterday became hooked up in a row with anglers.
The actor wants canoeists to "disturb" as many as possible, claiming they have too much power.
Rhys Jones has just filmed River Journeys, a BBC1 series which starts on Sunday, in which he canoes on the country's rivers.
He told BBC's Countryfile magazine: "Here is an extraordinary corridor of natural beauty. Who do you disturb? The occasional fisherman? We should try to disturb as many of them as possible."
Promoting such a stupid attitude will only make the situation worse. It's bad enough with militant cyclists on the roads without militant canoeists upsetting everyone on the rivers. The actor wants canoeists to "disturb" as many as possible, claiming they have too much power.

Surely there's enough river to go around.
You would think. You'd have thought that with all the footpaths and bridleways that sharing the tiny percentage of byways with vehicular access with the off-roading community wouldn't have been a problem either - but it is.
You'd have thought that people living near racetracks licenced to hold races just ten percent of the weekends in the year would have considered that a reasonable compromise - but they don't.
People don't like sharing when it means they have to compromise what they prefer to accomodate others.
In short. A lot of people are

No surprise there.

This is from the Mirror and remember he is a comedian. I thought the above was tongue in cheek? I read it as the anglers should be disturbed more becuase more people should take to canoes and seek out these "extraordinary corridors of natural beauty" for themselves?shoggoth1 said:

I think he's just joking around personally, and the anglists seem to have fallen for it hook, line and sinker!
LOL, nice one.I think your right though it was said in jest. Im a fisherman and live near the Thames and everyone who uses the river gets on just fine.
Anyone going through my lines on purpose would get a catapult full of maggots or grounbait hurled at them anyway.

I read it as the anglers should be disturbed more becuase more people should take to canoes and seek out these "extraordinary corridors of natural beauty" for themselves?I've been in a similar situation before - not with canoeing but with rowing. Some of the local fishermen were fairly militant in their disapproval of us using the river and tried just about every measure in the book from legal action to throwing maggots to even threatening one crew with a shotgun. As a result I don't have alot of sympathy for them - however I would never advocate aggravating them and I always instructed my crews to take all reasonable steps to minimise our impact on them.I seriously doubt it changed the mind of the hard core who rabidly hated us - but I certainly think it helped to prevent more from joining them.
Thought I'd just point out a few facts, as a kayaker myself I have had rocks and abuse thrown at me by fishermen because apparently by floating down a river we scare all the fish away.
Landowners are the worse though they belive that they own the river because they own the banks and if we followed this logic only around 5% of rivers are available for the public to use(and most of them are tidal). Threats with guns have been mentioned but it's never happened to me.
He may be a bit of a knob but at least he is bringing this to the attention of the british public.

Fishermen pay for rod licenses because the EA stock rivers in the UK with fish, but both rowers and kayakers don't use any resources they just float by. So why should we pay for anything?
ETA I'm not talking about most fishermen who are very friendly some even ask us to go to a certain spot and stir up the water, like everything it's the minority that are spoiling it for everyone.

Since they negotiate agreements with landowners and pay for access, you can see why anglers get upset about having their day ruined by hordes of stroppy dayglo freeloaders asserting their "rights" to do what the f
k they want.
Why not just pay for access like everyone else?
And who would they pay? The landowners own the banks, not the river.
Why not just pay for access like everyone else?
If it bothers the anglers that much maybe they should find another excuse to be out of the house while their wife shags the next-door neighbour.
