As above,

There is rarely anything worth watching on TV these days. What on earth is going on!?!?!?

Don't talk wet, if you've got Sky or cable and a broadband connection (to download torrents of shows not yet shown in the UK yet) then there should be more than enough content out there whatever your taste.

I'm sure that in the 'Good Old Days' there was never more than a couple of hours of passable tv a day, it was just split across 2 channels so everyone could find it, these days you've got to search out the good stuff and use a recording device to save shows for when you've got time to watch them (or due to schedule clashes or being out in the real world).

As an example, my Sky+ for this evening will be recording Rick Stein, Mock the Week, Reaper, Californication and Entourage. There's 3 or 4 hours worth, more than enough for one day. I think they're even on channel available on Freeview, so no Sky is not an excuse.

Que?

There is a huge amount of dross on TV these days - mainly because there is a huge amount of TV.

However, there is lots of good stuff buried in amongst the rubbish - you just have to look a bit harder than you used to.

Then again, what you think is rubbish, I might think is great.

What type of programmes do you like?

Hmm, yes it is horses for courses. I do have freeview but out in the sticks I don't get much of a signal and if a cloud comes over I lose ITV and Channel 4.

I like Mock the Week, The Inbetweeners, Formula 1, 8 out of 10 cats, Top Gear.. So Dave is a good channel....

I agree there are gems out there. That's why iplayer is so good, you can watch the gems when you want to and don't have to sit through the crap.

Simple answer:

It's becasue most people who watch TV are complete morons.

Why make decent TV shows when you can recycle old cheap garbage and 90% of the public (the afformantioned 'Morons') will still enjoy it?

And yet - last night there was "Coast" and "New Tricks" and I watched on 4OD the documentary on the V Bombers - and that was before looking to see what was on the specialist documentary channels.

So, there is good stuff out there - amidst all the "chewing gum for the eyes".

Both ITV and the BBC are fixated on "soap" style "drama" and various "crime" series. These only pickup a certain audience though. The Crime series tend to be treated as "special" hence the one to two hour format they are produced in. Again though like the "Soaps" they are formulaic to the point where you can guess the end and any plots are telegraphed to eh audience so far in advance that you may as well not bother. Where something "new" is tried such as "Doctor Who", "Robin Hood", "Merlin", "Primeval", "Torchwood" and "Demons" they tend to live hand to mouth generally in fear of axing. "Who" has managed to break out by being an export success and "Primeval" looked to have done the same only to fall foul of ITV's problems. Others such as "Being Human" are successes on the smaller channels and claw their way to success. A "success" that died was "Crime Traveller" for example. A ratings winner that withered away due to changes in the BBC.

Yes, that is perhaps also the case.

I must say I love Dragons Den to see what the fruitcakes will come up with (inventors), but I get really, really p***ed off when voice over muppet just tells me what happened 12 seconds ago. So that is a good show which then is frustrating to watch due to the muppetry of the voice over.

Debra: "I'd like to make an offer"
Voiceover: "Debra wants to make an offer"

It has got worse this series.
