What the hell!

I have spent 27 years believing that he jumped the fence to freedom. Finally sat down and watched it on Living today and he doesn't make it.

How can i have been mislead all these years. The iconic image is a symbol of success and escaping, not jumping the little fence and not the big one!

Towards the closing scenes Steve Mcqueen plays the part of a guard on the bikes chasing him as well, they then put the footage together which back in the 60's was quite an achievement.

Also he tries to escape on a 1960's British Triumph motor bike during the war

Of course, the Steve McQueen character is the one major fiction of the whole story. Still a great movie though.

As the Wiki article indicates, there is a lot more fiction and artistic licence than just Hilts. Sure, it's gives a reasonably accurate flavour of events but it is by no means entirely factual.
