Benefit Busters.....
Discussion
Ach, beat me to the punch. Perfect PH piss boiler this one.
Hackles at the ready? This sharp new series about the welfare system is bound to get them rising, whatever your politics. Some viewers will be outraged by the attitudes of the benefit claimants Fergus O'Brien has filmed. Others will recoil at the way private firms are making profits from coaching the unemployed into jobs. There's something to rile everyone. For instance, 26-year-old Dawn, an unemployed DJ owing 75,000 pounds on her credit cards, insists she'll do "whatever it takes" to get off benefits and pay her debts, but when a DJ-ing job comes up, she decides against it...because of the late hours. Doing her best to bounce Dawn into work is the formidable Hayley Taylor of the firm A4E, who runs a "confidence-building course" for out-of-work lone parents. It's a life-coaching support group that runs on Hayley's terrifying version of tough love, mixed with patronising metaphors about caterpillars and butterflies, and a lot of tears. But it gets results, or seems to. And it makes for an hour of astonishing, provocative television
