When the movie was launched last year I was in the US and it got panned by the media there, mainly because of Cruise's performance, so I didn't go see it. It's on SKY box office at the moment and I watched it last night.
What a good film! Cruise is definitely the weak link as Stauffenberg but the rest of the cast consists of a who's who of British acrors. Bill Nighy, Kenneth Branagh, Kenneth Cranham, Eddie Izzard (as a general!), Kevin McNally, Terence Stamp, Tom Wilkinson etc.... I can only assume that Cruise was cast to appeal to US audiences.
I thought it was well made, very good building of tension, excellent plot etc.. Having been online and re visited the actual events surrounding the attempted July 20 coup it also seems that it represented the true facts reasonably well.
Worth seeing in my opinion.

Watched it recently, if it was done like Downfall in German with subtitles, it would have been a great movie, I just found Cruise too weak an actor to pull it off.
Try and get an American audience to watch a movie with subtitles.
Cruise was miscast but he wasn't terrible and I don't think it detracted too much from the film. Daniel Craig would have been perfect..
Great film thought cruise was good but probably not the best choice (Mrs Staufenberg on the other hand
)
Though yes it does appear the idea of a truce with the 'allies' (i.e the West) was so they could join forces and secure Germany against the Russians, whilst holding onto Poland .etc
