My IMDB rating laws
Discussion
I have an IMDB rating law that has worked for me.
Anything over 8.0 is definately worth a watch (and I think I've seen most of them anyway).
Between 7.5 & 7.9, I'll have a look at a couple of comments but it's likely that it will be good and I'll get into it.
Between 7.0 & 7.4, needs a little more reserach and probably will have to be in a genre that I like so I can forgive a bit of rubbishness.
Between 6.0 & 6.9, has to be very genre specific to have a chance of holding my attention for more than 5 mins - often a pants film but can throw up the odd enjoyable romp, boys film with gratuitous boys stuff, guns, cars, chicks etc - very much brain-in-neutral type stuff.
Below 5.9 - never bother, always a waste of time.

Anything above 8 is almost always worth a watch.
If a comedy gets anything above 8 then it is definitely worth a watch. I guess 'cause humour is quite specific, not all comedies are appreciated, but you know if it gets a rating of 8+ it must be good.
Usually anything above 6 is worth a watch.
I'm not sure why, but with Virgin TV, they no longer list the leading cast members in the information box when you press it. So I often find myself nipping on to the computer to see who's in the film and if it's worth watching.

Sorry guys I have to dissagree.
As most people who vote on IMDB are 10 YO Americans you cannot trust their ratings. Just read some of teh comments on one of your favourite films.
When 50k people vote a movie about 8/10 its worth a watch. As most people who vote on IMDB are 10 YO Americans you cannot trust their ratings. Just read some of teh comments on one of your favourite films.
The sheeer scale of the place, and the numbers that vote mean it can be trusted.

If you click on the actual rating itself you get a demographic breakdown and in it there is an average rating for non-American audience As most people who vote on IMDB are 10 YO Americans you cannot trust their ratings. Just read some of teh comments on one of your favourite films.

The age and sex-related breakdowns are quite interesting too and often vary a bit.
I agree with you generally though, I would love to see the Top 250 with American votes excluded. It has far too much recent crap in it, which I suppose will slowly drop out as they fail to stand the test of time.
