why on earth is flog it on BBC HD when BBC2 are showing a live football game? admittedly, it's not a 'big 4' clash, but derby v qpr will have plenty of neutral viewers.

is it much more expensive to transmit a live spectacle in HD?

The way I understand it is that live programmes use real HD cameras, need more bandwidth to transmit and HD cams are not cheap!
Programmes like Flog It are shown on the HD channel but are just 'upscaled' to appear like HD.

BBC aren't allowed to upscale SD content for BBC HD channel as others do. Has to reach a minimum HD standard (which is why some 'HD' programmes aren't on BBC HD either) and only a small proportion of a programme is allowed to be SD (archive clips etc).

Live OB stuff requires all the OB kit, which there's probably still a limited supply of/budget for and may already be at some other event. Recorded stuff is much easier as you can film it and then carry out the editing later. Studio based is even easier. Programmes like Flog It can get away with cheaper cameras whereas sport would require more powerful and expensive models (zoom etc).

But in this particular case, the football wasn't due to finish until 7:30 while Strictly Come Dancing started at 7:00. So Flog It was just filler until SCD started.

I have HD on free-view but I have a TV with a built in receiver connected to an old sky dish. Channel 108 and the 'Life' programme is really gory and lifelike on HD, not for the feint hearted.
I think there are a lot of BBC programmes transmitted in HD on the normal channels the picture is so good.
The ITV footie is usually in HD too.

That will be because the source TV won't be HD. The British GP might be HD if there is going to be one. The Americans still broadcast in 4:3

Isn't it because Bernie charges extra for the HD feed and the BBC refuse to pay for it?

Rumours of MotoGP in HD next year.

MotoGP used to be in HD on Eurosport, but now they're not allowed to show it live they don't bother.

MotoGP was on the Eurosport HD channel but was never in HD. It just looked better because Eurosport give the HD channel more bandwidth.

MotoGP have announced (I think) that they are providing an HD feed next year, but it is not clear if anyone is going to pick it up/pay for it. Until now there has been no HD feed and therefore no-one could show it in HD.

Next thing that will happen is the BBC/government will change the Tv licence so they will charge more for HD than normal colour.

They could be generous and make B&W free!

Do you have to give them ideas? Bad enough that Sky charge for HD with, basically, rubbish progs on them. Even the HD movies are mostly just upscaled.

Mind you, "Life" was superb in HD - but not worth paying the BBC extra license fee for just one decent prog.

I believe what you have there is 'FreeSat', not 'FreeView'.

Freeview HD transmissions start in the Granada & London areas this December...But, the Freeview HD boxes aren't due in the shops until "early 2010". rolleyes

They reckon 50% of the country will have access by the time the Word Cup kicks off.

Am I right in thinking that programmes on FreeSat will be the same as the FreeView ones?
At the moment there are a few ITV and C4 programmes in HD on FreeSat as well as the BBC

Test transmissions do begin soon from Winter Hill. I've seen HD over freeview on a recent trip to Kingswood Warren and it looks fantastic. No doubt once it gets going the bit rates will get reduced and it will end up looking similar to how SD should.
