I went to see my 1st modern 3D movie last night. A Christmas Carol, which was very good and mostly very close to the book. Not child friendly though and quite scary in places.

What I wanted to write about here though was 3D. I know there are a lot of new films coming out in 3D and they mostly seem to be cartoons or CGI fests but it still seems to be a bit of a gimick with things shooting out of the screen at you and the 3D being really obvious layering, much like reading a pop up book.

I actually though it detracted from the film itself.

They showed a lot of other ads for 3D including Avatar but again they were all things shooting out of the screen type effects and I felt like I was in a fish bowl a bit unreal.

What do you think of 3D? does it have a future or is it forever going to be a gimick.

Presumably the studio's are pushing it as it's a lot harder ot pirate. Saw Up in 3D and was quite impressed. The 3D effects weren't intrusive.

Didn't they try it in the 50's?

Really annoys me, I refuse to go see a 3D film, I hate watching them because it's not a comfortable experience.

Watched "UP" in 3D and was very impressed. The 3D worked great, they gave us normal looking glasses, not those red and green things and thought it was great. Although watched Coraline with the kids in 3D and had to take the glasses off and put the 2D version on as it made all out eyes hurt

I am not a fan of 3D. Recently watched Coraline, and spent the next day suffering from a nagging head ache and tired eyes after being somewhat underwhelmed by the so called 3D effects. I agree with the earlier poster - it really does detract from the film

I watched the Shrek 4D film at Universal over the summer in the US, I was really impressed by the 3D aspect to be honest. Perhaps it's still a novelty for me as I never really got it last time around when I was a kid. I think the technology has moved on a little to make it look a bit neater nowadays.

The industry move to 3D has little to do with viewing enjoyment and everything to do with fighting piracy. The genius element to this plan is not only can they curb that (in itself a good thing) but they can make us pay for it!

I've given it a go, but there is nothing to be gained by us the viewers in 3D. Up, for example, is a great looking film in conventional format, there is nothing in it that requires the 3D aspect.

I refuse to fund the studio's war on piracy, thats their problem and not mine.

Yeah, the polarised system in the cinemas is way better than the coloured system on TV, saw a 3D TV episode using red/blue and really couldn't get on with it at all.

I am happy to stay watching in 2D ,Have seen a few of the latest 3D offerings ,I think the first was Beowulf a couple of years ago? and have not been really impressed by them

Call me tight but I really hate having to pay an extra couple of quid on top of the normal ticket price to smile

Check out youtube, they have some sort of 3d promotion or trial on.

You send them a stereo vid (2 cameras a few inches apart) and they'll host it in a good few different 3d ways, stereoscopic, red/cyan etc.

Actually, that reminds me. The tickets were £12 instead of £8. Not sure I will bother next time.

It also just reminds me that it was very very dark, now the film itself was night set and foggy london, but the polarised glasses made it darker and I was squinting alot.

Sure I saw something on TV over the weekend about Channel 4 having a 3D week next week, and inviting viewers to pick up their 3D glasses free of charge from their nearest Sainsburys. However, now I type this, it does seem a little 1980's and may have been a particularly vivid flashback...

Time to Google, methinks!

Woo! Not a dream!

A good film / book / play etc draws you in with it's narrative, it's characters, dialogue etc.

If it's well written and well performed, in the case of animation by perform I mean the voice acting then it will be an enjoyable experience. Regardless of medium.

I really don't see what the 3D brings to the table and it's never going to compensate for poor writing, poor narrative etc.
