IMDB isn't helping and I need an argument settled.

Was this film loosely based on the 80's TV show "Metal Mickey"?

Thanks,

I'm sorry but the discussion has flared up again. Does anyone have any firm facts?

How can you remake Short Circuit?

I loved that film (and still do). A travesty I tell thee!

'Johnny Five, is alive!'

I even have the song 'Who's Johnny' by El DeBarge that was used in the film on audio cassette as I liked it so much...

I never ever heard that Metal Mickey had anything to do withn Short Circuit.

Did you know that Metal Mickey was directed by ex-Monkee, Mickey Dolenz?

It's a good film, I can't see a re-make being anywhere near good enough.....

Howard Marner: What if it goes out and melts down a bus load of nuns? How would you like to write the headline on that one?
Benjamin Jabituya: Nun soup?

Whould anyone think Metal Mickey and Johhny 5 are related? Haha.

Now I'm quoting Wikipedia here, so don't take it as gospel...

"This film was conceived after the producers found success with an educational video about a robot that they created and distributed to local colleges. Studying other films with a prominent robot cast in them (like the Star Wars series) for inspiration, they decided to take a more realistic approach to the standard "living robot" plot, asking how people would truly react if a living robot appeared before them (with the theory that no one would believe for a second the robot was alive). As part of this, they purposely made Captain Skroeder the one taking the most rational action against the robot, having him do the "right" thing despite being a villain.

According to the commentary in the DVD, Johnny 5 was the most expensive part of the movie, requiring several different versions to be made for different sequences. Almost everything else in the movie was relatively inexpensive, allowing them to allocate as much money as they needed for the robot character. Johnny 5 was designed by Syd Mead, the "visual futurist" famous for his work on Blade Runner and TRON."

I don't think Metal Mickey ever aired on TV in the U.S. so I doubt the producers of Short Circuit were even aware of it.

Because Hollywood has decided that rather than risk big money on new ideas, they'll just rehash old ones tapping into peoples sense of nostalgia.

Yup - and this is why Bill Murray is refusing to be part of Ghostbusters 3 - because it's written as a "reboot" of the franchise and he doesn't play the Hollywood game.

At least the remake has the same writing team as the original: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0929281/fullcredits

So, the story might be okay, but who could ever replace Ally Sheedy...?

I would still ravage her until we both fell apart.

How could a re-making of Short Circuit be updated?

Best lines in Short Circuit "Hey laserlips, your mama was a snowblower!"

Ben Jabituya, "Oh her pants are blazing for you Newton Crosby!"

In Metal Mickey, what happened to Lucinda Bateson who played Hayley? She was kind of cute.
