New Sherlock Holmes
Discussion
Has anyone else seen the trailer for the new Sherlock Holmes film? Caught it at the cinema last night and it really wasn’t what I was expecting, seems they’ve really americanised it and Robert Downey Jr seems to be playing it quite camp. I'm no expert on the source material (But have read The Hound of the Baskervilles 11 years ago during my GCSE’s) but there were a few things that didn’t feel right;
• Holmes engaging in martial arts
• Downey Jr putting on an overly camp English accent
• Watson punching Holmes in the face during a bout of banter
• Holmes in a gun fight with a gun in each hand firing madly
• Holmes jumps from a window in the houses of parliament into the Thames, then swims ashore all while sill smoking his pipe
• Holmes having a perilous sword fights atop a cgi version of London Bridge.
• Massive overuse of CGI
It just wasn’t what I was expecting; I’ll probably still see it as the trailers do usually contain all the action bits to draw people in. Plus it is by Guy Ritchie after all, and although I haven’t fully forgiven him for revolver, Lock Stock and Snatch were both awesome.
It does irritate me when American’s are cast as British characters; there are plenty of good British actors who would be great in the part.
Maybe too many BBC specials have polluted me into thinking of Holmes as a pipe smoking older gentleman?

I saw the trailer too! Looks fun in a trashy americanised kind of way. Did you know that both Jude Law (Dr Watson) and Robert Downey JR both like their martial arts and when they first met up they actually went off to spar with each other for fun. I suspect Conan Doyle is spinning in his grave, but if the movie makes more people read the books it can't be a bad thing.
Jeremy Brett and the Granada adaptation's remain the most faithful to Conan Doyle's books. I find that Watson tends to be marginalised in anything else. Hollywood tends to forget that Although Holmes did wield a gun and was a user of martial arts, He tended to outwit his opponents rather than fight them. His habit of "recreational" drug use to alleviate his boredom also tends to be overlooked.
In the books it states that he is a dab-hand at martial arts, most notably boxing, but also other types. It's also mentioned that he's a bit of a swordsman too.
You've got to forgive certain things though as it is a film and they've got to appeal to the lowest common denominator. They've also mentioned that they're using this to introduce the characters and they'll dig deeper into his drug addiction in later films.

The trailer for this keeps crashing noisily on to my television screen, much to my disdain.
I expect it to be bloody awful.
A proper dog's dinner's worth of OTT CGI, ludicrious Bond/Bourne/Bauer-style fighting and action sequences, historically inaccuracies aplenty, and dreadful cockernee Lock Stock farking geezerness.
However if it is good I will eat my words, if I have any room left after all that turkey dinner.

It looks like yet another reason for why Guy Ritchie shouldnt be allowed within shouting distance of a film studio. Other than the names of the characters it doesn't appear to bear any resemblence to Conan Doyles original creation in any way.
If people enjoy it then fine, but a bone fide Sherlock Holmes I suspect it isn't. A shame really when the original stories would lend themselves so well to a truely well made film(read: not hollywood blockbuster s
te).
