We have all read the thread slagging off TG, what positive suggestion would you make to improve it and make it a better programme?

Hopefully you will post positive things rather than regurgitating the negative stuff that has been posted on the other thread.

I will make a suggestion about SIARPC which is like a lot of programmes on TV and radio where the guests only want to appear when they have a film, book, TV show or DVD to promote. It is just another programme that they 'have' to do as they do the rounds and the chances of getting somebody who is a real petrol head are going to be thin so they end up with a shortlist of who is available.

So I would rest it and I think they should actively go out and ask people who have had an effect on the motor industry or worked on certain makes or models, designed and invented something to do with the auto industry.
All they need to do is make an announcement on the show and then interview the people who respond and they have the most interesting and amusing on the show. They don't need to drive the car round the circuit as AFAIC once you have seen one Muppet make a hash of it you have seen them all.

Do you have a positive suggestion to make? Replacing JC, JM, and RM don't count as a suggestion smile

The SIARPC is tired, and unless they can change it to cherry picked petrolheads who are genuinely interested in being there without promoting a book or film it should be dropped.

I'd like to see more motorsports stuff, not news, but topical stuff. They've proven countless times they can make a great show. The challenges / specials are always pretty decent, perhaps they could do more of those, but on a smaller scale to keep in line with their new 'reduced budget' approach.

But, at the end of the day it's entertainment first and a car show second due to the numbers of average joes who watch it that aren't really petrolheads, so as long as it appeals to the masses it'll be strung out.

Oh, and replace that berk hammond.

Whilst that will possibly generate some interest from the cognoscenti, I can guarantee it will lose 100 times more viewers who just tuned in to see a piano being dropped on a Marina.

I think they should scrap SIRPC.

OR

Make the reasonably priced car RWD, say an MX-5 as it's still reasonably priced but will sort the men out from the boys biggrin

TG are great for visuals, so lets have more of the cars. Show us the interiors of the cars etc. not "bits" of the car.

I think it worked best when they did some review type of stuff but with the humour and wit thrown in.

Let them each set the lap records for the car. Be good to see the difference between a racing drivers lap and one that represents most of us. i.e. which is really faster in mere mortals hands.

Give them each £5k or £10 and each week it's a different type. e.g. they go for a roadster, a luxobarge, a family car etc. and see which is best. After all, most people buy used cars, not new. Which is the best £15k used sports car for example. So far it's new cars or old snotters for the group "tests"/road trips.

After finding the best driving road in the world I think they should find the worst road in the world. Maybe that road of death in Bolivia, then drop a poisonous spider on Hammond's lap causing him to swerve and almost crash off the edge..........oh.... they did that already, to be seen on December 27th.

They need a girl. yes

Preferably a nice leggy one like Suzi Perry - if only for those tantalising up the skirt shots as she gets in and out of the car

Or a girl that knows something about driving. What's happened to Sabine ?

Juiia Bradbury is unfortunately past her sell by date.

Anyone got any other suggestions?

I think they should have a professional driver in a reasonably priced car. I know they've picked a few F1 drivers for a lap on the track. Apart from F1, I think they've plenty of drivers to choose from, such as IRC champion Kris Meeke, WRC driver Matt Wilson, BRC Champion Keith Cronin, in addition to BTCC drivers. And what about including NASCAR drivers?

I'd be prepared to let James May go. He's proved that he's a superb presenter and can make enjoyable programmes outside TG's influence.

Maybe have a celeb male and female each week to join the team for the whole hour.
The three presenters although not passed there sell by date (imho) just need shaking up a bit.
And spice up the SIARPC bit ,say get them in a mid engined Porsche Cayman or Boxster and let them show us some real driving skills if they have them.
Dont know weather beeb will run to the extra expence though

I would:

  • Rest SIARPC and make more use of the racing drivers board, at the moment it's only F1 drivers so why not invite the likes of Seb Loeb, Valentino Rossi or Tom Kristensen.
  • Do more of the challenges like the buying the Alfa Romeo and the big coupe that isn't a Porsche ones they did, they were great and not too scripted.
  • The bits where they all pick a car and test it and drive each others a la taking the Porsche 911, BMW 645 and Jag XKR to Pendine Sands.

Regards SIARPC and the comment above about profesional drivers, I'd like to see some of the BTCC drivers they always wheel out for the pointless races in the Laccetti. Add to the mix some drivers from other race classes, could make more interesting viewing! Or would Stig get too upset if they continually beat his time?

I find the Cool Wall boring. Clarkson resembles a pub bore and likes to get his way on this, even if he eats photographs and suspends them well out of Hammond's reach. So, I think it needs a revamp. Viewers could take part in an online vote for the coolest and uncoolest car of the entire series. If they can ask viewers to state who's made the greatest number of cars, then it shouldn't be too much trouble for the TG team.

Like I said in a previous post, I'd let James may go. He's outgrown TG altogether. He could be replaced with a competant presenter who could be "slightly at odds" with Clarkson. I'd like to see a return to the Quentin Willson days. I remember one edition, he was asked to road test a people carrier. He told us straight what he thought of said vehicle and the onlookers who were pointing at him and laughing before abandoning the offensive car by the roadside....and no attempt to wreck it.

SIARPC is a total waste of time and like everyone else on here, I'd be happy to see it binned.

More challenges would be good. Crossing the channel was great, the Eagle iThrust utterly atrocious. More situations where things can and will go wrong, rather than hamming it up for the cameras.

Less tyre smoke around a closed track. It's boring. In fact it's more than that, it's soporific, mindnumbing and devoid of any intelligence.

I like the idea of having more racing drivers doing laps, it would be interesting to see how they all did. Hardly a scientific comparison, but interesting none the less.

Scrap the SIARPC slot and use the time productively.

Maybe one week a proper car review of a car a fair percentage of the audience might actually buy. Another week a look at the used car market. Perhaps another week James doing a piece on some classic cars.

I have no problems with Top Gear being mainly a light entertainment show. Just cut out the deadwood and replace it with something good.
