While I admire the efforts/achievements of Packer and Izzard, neither are sports personalities.
As ever, there is another thread running on this topic elsewhere on PH (in the Sports Forum - where else?).I made this point over there which I think is pertinent. The title of the award was created in 1954, when the use of the word "personality" was slightly different to how you use it today.
The problem here is that when the award was invented in the 1950s, the word "personality" was used in a different way to how it is today. We now tend to use the word to describe the person's characteristic as a person i.e. how they appear in public. Back then, the word "personality" was used instead of the word "person". Nobody would ever have used an expression "Sports Person of the Year" back then.
When you think about it, the arrival of the word "person" in this context arrises out of the growth of feminism in the 60sm when the terms Chairman and Spokeman began to be replaced by Chair Person or Spokes Person.
I would guesss that the BBC faced a dilemma when they were originally naming the award. I bet the original title was probably going to be BBC Sportsman of the Year but they decided to substitute "Personality" so that ladies were eligible to be voted for. They would not have inserted the word "Person" in that context back then.
Edited to Add - a quick look at the history of the show indicates that its originator wanted to call it BBC Sports Man and Sportswoman of the year award. The Daily Record newspaper objected as they already sponsored a similar named trophy and that is why they opted for the word "Personality". The first award was made in 1954 and the first woman won in 1962.
