Why can't we have movies like "The Italian Job" anymore?

I'm talking about the original, what a fun and entertaining movie! It had a bit of everything in it without being needlessly action packed or sexy or gunslinging or whatever. Plus, CARS!

Any other movies you can recommend along similar lines from the same era?

Shame about the Jags, Aston, and Lambo, though!

Brilliant film.

The Aston survived with just a broken windscreen and frame. It was a Lancia that went over the cliff, faked up to look like the DB4. If you freeze frame the film you can see it's left hand drive.

No, of course I didn't. Someone told me.

Okay, I didgetmecoat

Consumer driven I would guess.

People want big budget effects and crap story lines.

The original "caper" movie has to be "The League Of Gentlemen"

It's been on Film 4 a couple of times recently, and is always worth another viewing.

Just thought of a good caper movie, it's yank, but still god.
The Hot Rock. And if you check out some Caine films from the same period they are also good. Gambit and the Man Who Would be King spring to mind....also Kelly's Heroes!

edit and the Lavender Hill Mob

I've never seen all of the Italian job, I don't like crime capers.

That's a shame. You'll have missed the underlying metaphor.

The Italian Job (the proper one, not the crap new one) will be on Channel 4 at 7:05 tomorrow night.

Not sure if I dare watch it because it usually makes me want to buy an old Mini.

I'm surprised it was just the screen and frame to be honest. The digger had it up against the wall before the shot changed from the Aston to the Lancia. I'd have thought the rear offside panels would have been damaged.

I'm also surprised they spent the time making a Lancia look like the Aston. Wonder what that cost? Of course it must have been less than an Aston.

You can clearly see when the shot changes the car goes from RHD to LHD.

Good call. clap

Always makes me want a Mini too.

Why have I never seen a Mini with three spotlights on the front grill in the style of the film?
