Recently met a survivor who had decided to go hiking up a mountain with her boyfriend for the day. I think it took her 2 years of counselling to get over it, very scary stuff.

So they were safe up the mountain then? Did the boyfriend drown or something?

Yep safe as houses, but they could see everything that was happening, it had taken quite a bit of nagging to get the boyfriend to go on the hike, he was happy relaxing at the pool! Nobody from their hotel survived, and neither did their relationship once they got home

Then there's the eyewitnesses talking about their friends and family who may/may not have survived.

I can't get over the folk commenting that the 'tide' has gone out so quickly, and thinking it funny. It might have taken me a second or two, but I like to think I'd have been running uphill pretty quickly.

My fiancee just started crying when the couple mentioned that their daughter had drowned. Tragic stuff!

I know I wasn't there and hindsight is a wonderful thing, but I wonder how long it would have taken for me to start running! Some of the people seemed to just stand there and watch it.

just cried for the first time in ages watching this prog... little girl same age as mine drowned so very sad so many lost their lives

I guess because there was no warning or reason for it to happen and by the time it computed it was too late?

I'd like to think I'd have been out of there sharpish, but unless you're in that situation, you've no idea how you'd react. I imagine many saw the wave but didn't realise the scale when it was that far out. They probably thought it was shoulder height or so.
