I'm just watching the recording of Barton Fink I did during the holiday and have been reminded of just how absolutely brilliant John Goodman's acting is. This made me reflect on other examples of stunning acting and so I wondered if folk had seen it and thought the same or had other examples that really stood out for them?

As for John Goodman - I won't go into detail on the character or plot in case anyone has yet to see this fantastic film - the Cohen brother are supposed to have written the part with him in mind. What strikes me is the authenticity of his characterisation (and he is not what he seems?); simultaneously self-deprecating but domineering, friendly and 'folksy' but menacing etc.

I always prefer the 'acting' to seem invisible, not to get in the way but in this case the quality and believability just stands out yet without spoiling the story. It's just everything about the performance that strikes me - his body language and demeanour, the eye contact (and the way hs eyes change, like that scary, ready here I come look in the wrestling scene!), mannerisms, appearance and especially the convincing way he delivers the lines. He comes over as someone you just feel you have met/can believe in. Brilliant!

PS - and I'm not usually given to hero worship!

Barton Fink is a great film, I really didn't see it coming. I think Goodman is at his best in Cohen movies because, as you say, they write for him.
