Did anyone watch the documentary 'Defamation' on More4 last night? I'm watching it just now and the paranoia is pretty eye opening.

The premise is that a young Israeli has spent his entire life seeing newspaper articles about anti-semitism being published in Israel, but has never actually experienced it. He decides to go out and try and find the anti-semitic sentiments that exist around the world. He spends quite a bit of time with the Anti Defamation League in the US, but also goes on a trip to the Nazi camps (Auschwitz etc) with an Israeli schooltrip.

  • Edit** Yes, the title should be defamation and not dafamation.

Tried to watch it, but gave up - too scary/sad.

The ADL I can happily ignore, but the indoctrination of the kids visiting Poland was very sad - the irony being that the perils of indictrination may be the biggest lesson to learn from a trip to Auschwitz.

I may be misunderstanding your post ...

Are you saying that kids being taught about the holocaust and anti Semitism are being indoctrinated?

If you are then you're WAY off the mark. Go to Poland and wear the Jewish head covering - then see exactly what anti Semitism is when you get stoned - THIS IS HAPPENING IN 2010!

Basically the kids were being taught that everyone in every country will hate you because you are a Jew. While I am sure that anti-semitism still exists, the level of paranoia being installed in the kids was something else. It was pretty disturbing to watch.

The knock on effect of the indoctrination was seen later in the film when the kids started seeing anti-semitism where it didn't exist. They had basically been preconditioned to see it everywhere they looked.

Fair enough - I heard it was pretty tough to watch.

What he said. The children were seeing racism when there was none - including the girl who was convinced an old man had called her a Jewish bh. Even as the film director, an Israeli Jew himself, told her the man hadn't said anything of the sort (and we had the subtitles t prove it), she remained utterly convinced.
