What film was it? (years old!!!)

Many many many many years ago.....over 20 years ago....jesus that's a long time ago 
Well I was watching a film at my nans (I think it was out about the same time as Alien as I remember the chest buster giving me nightmares for weeks as a week 4 year old
) which involved a woman who might have been an alien, and she had a gun which turned people into monsters or mutants.
It has bugged me for a few years now as I cannot remember what the film was called at all, however the name "Angelo" seems to ring a bell (whether this was the title or name of a character I do not know )
A very vague description I know, but I thought it might be worth asking the PH Council
