Watched this last night, best film I have seen in a very LONG time.

I watched this at a local cinema, it doesn't appear to be showing at any of the main cinemas (Vue/Odeon) so might be one for the DVD collection.

It's basically The Godfather, but in a French prison. The battle between the Muslims, Corsicans & Italians. This film is an absolute MUST SEE.

It's a long film but you feel very involved with the storyline, you'll love this if you appreciate good cinema such as Leon.

10/10 from me, easily.

P.S. Yes it is subtitled, but doesn't take away from it being a great film. This is the only reason I can think of, why it hasn't been hyped up by the media. Shame really

In contrast to your review, I found this the most disappointing film I've seen in ages and it was a film I really expected to like.
I thought it was too long, too boring, too unrealisitic and I thought that none of the charachters were particularly good. I struggled to think of a good thing to say about it. I couldn't really uinderstand why it was so well reviewed.
Each to there own I think.
Have you seen Mesrine?
Along similar lines but I thought that has a lot more going for it.

I mentioned this on another forum and I wasnt the only one who didn't like it!

I certainly think it will be one of those 'marmite' films, but thoroughly enjoyed it.

Can't say I've seen the one you mentioned, will get hold of it at some point and let you know

Though it appears we have a clash on taste wink

Is it this one? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byQPZ00h9V4

Not neccesarily different tastes. I would venture that the very fact that we both made the effort to see this film suggests we probably have similar tastes normally. You mention Leon- definitely one of my favourite films.

ANyway- yes-that's the film-I recommend giving it a go. All 5 hours of it!

+1, wasn't impressed, a decent film but not memorable; failed to live up to the hype.

Leon is in my top 10 of all time too

I did wonder why the DVD was 2 disc.

Nice

Strangely, though, it does feel like watching distinctly different films. Almost a different style. I was quite suprised.

There appear to be a number of them, released similar times.

Mesrine: Killer Instinct
Mesrine: Death Instinct
Mesrine: L'ennemi Public No 1

Any idea which one I should be purchasing?

+2, thought it was relentless in it's misery and just didn't entertain me, which is something i look for on Saturday night at the flicks!

Im pretty sure the first two you mentioned are the same film (just a slightly different translation?)
L'nnemi is definitely the second part.
Iveonly seen it as a double-film purchase

I watched it last night... it was... 'interesting'.

Whoever had done the subs translation was clearly retarded. Anything over five words turned into nonsensical gibberish and at times entire lines of dialogue were omitted.

(It's not showing here so I downloaded it, my own fault!)
