I loved the old series, the special effects were a bit naff as was some of the acting, but the storyline was brilliant.

Anyone remember it (fondly or not).

Anyone looking forward to the new "Re-make" starting on Syfy channel tomorrow night?

Have done a search, couldn't find another thread about it.

I remember it vividly and, as a sci-fi loving teenager, being really swept away by the mini-series. (Less so the series that followed, but I still watched it religiously).

I downloaded the first episode of the remake and, while I enjoyed it, it didn't "grab" me like the original - probably because I'm older and more jaundiced, but also because the big "reveal" isn't exactly a surprise second time around. I didn't bother watching any of the other 3 episodes I had torrented.

Still, the Sky+ is already series-linked for it....

Without giving too much away, do you think it will be a gritty improvement in the same way Battlestar Galactica was improved? I am looking forward to it, I just ordered the original off Amazon! LOL

Loved the original mini-series, but never bothered with the follow-ups. Watched the first 4 parts of the new series and it was Ok, although seeing as it aired back in November I cannot remember how it ended. I've got the latest 2eps that have just aired to watch, which I might do tonight.

FFS, is there nothing that they won't remake now?

(I too liked the original mini-series but what followed was a fairly lame soap-opera in the style of Dynasty only with reptile-people)

I certainly hope so. It's got a good cast - I really like Alan Tudyk and Morena Baccarin (not surprising as I was a huge fan if Firefly - RIP cry ) and the woman from Lost - Elizabeth something.

Let's hope that the writers do a decent reboot of the original, a la BSG, and that the network actually gives it a decent run rather than canning it early-doors.

I original was ace. I remember being allowed to stay up and watch it. Being in primary school that was a privilege!biggrin
Hope the remake is a BSG style gritty-up.

I’m sorry to say that the new series is a bit rubbish. My wife’s been quite enjoying it, but I’m finding it really flat in comparison to the original. Way too much cheap green-screen work as well. There’s a noticeable drop in production values after the first four episodes.

I loved the original, it was on past my bed-time but my parents would take it and I would watch in before going to school the next day.

I hope the new series won't ruin it.

Just a heads up, it's on tonight on Syfy (EPG 129 or 214 for HD) @ 22:00.

Cheap green screen? The effects are pretty seamless 99% of the time.

Its an interesting story, only based on some ideas from the "original" series. And to be honest, anyone saying that the original series was great needs to re-watch it. The original, as much as I enjoyed it at the time was pretty lousy, with some seriously bad acting.

And I love the idea of the aliens having been <spoiler removed>.

Seriously, wait until you reach episode five. The first four were filmed on quite a high budget, then the series went on hiatus for a few months (until the Winter Olympics finished and the US TV schedules were clear again). When it returned for episode five onwards, the budget was radically chopped, resulting in lots more scenes filmed on green screen with poorly rendered CGI backdrops and less filming on real locations.

Still, all forgivable if the writing is good enough to keep you hooked. Effects aren’t all that important in the grand scheme of things!

I’m finding the plot rushed and the characters thin. Plus that girl playing the lead only has one facial expression.

It's like someone has given her a half hearted chelsea smile.

Has there been any of the original actors arriving in this new version yet?

Botox; why do producers and directors hire actors with no ability to express emotion?

Certainly wasn't blown away by it in the way I'd hoped and the way the nation was with the original. So far there hasn't really been a massive requirement for special effects. A bit like a standard FBI show to be honest, with the "Terrorists" being Aliens. I'll watch a few more but so far, not hugely impressed.
The only actor I recognise is the woman who played "Tory" in BSG.

^^^ Agree, I didn't feel the need to sit up and watch both parts last night, it felt like any other crime type show, just with aliens thrown in.

As for those recognised:
Alan Tudyk - Knights Tale/Firefly/Dollhouse
Lexa Doig - Andromeda

So no one else watched "Firefly" or the Serenity movie then (at least 2 from there).

It's a bit slow at the moment (I've watched up to episode 6) but war hasn't broken out yet so I hoping things pick up form there (the original was very slow to begin with - I have the lot on DVD smile )
