I see this will be available (at my house at least) in 2012. Is there a difference between this & currently available Freesat HD?

Same channels as far as I'm aware, just Freeview HD goes through your antenna and Freesat goes through a satellite dish. The latter is currently the cheaper option, as the launch Freeview HD boxes are expensive.

Freesat is not the same as Freeview - quite a few channels missing but it can also pick up non-Freesat FTA satellite channels too.

I think the question was regarding HD?
I've got standard Freeview, but also considering HD. Either via a settop box or satellite.

I meant the HD channels are the same. Which non-HD channels from Freeview are missing on Freesat? I have both and can't think of any notable channels missing.

Is anyone here actually viewing Freeview HD yet?

I am barely in range of Crystal Palace and I want to know if it's worth messing around up on the roof with a massive high gain antenna if it's not worth getting.

My local transmitter won't deliver the service until 2012 and I've got no other options where I am (satellites are blocked by trees I can't chop down!)

Freesat is great in that it frees you from the grip of SKY subscription fees, but I would love if they at least offered the same channels as Freeview.

Has Channel 4 HD been announced for Freesat HD yet? I understand it's now available on Freeview HD but apparently Sky have a deal that encrypts it on satellite platforms.

EXACTLY the reason I'm asking on here. Murdoch's pocketing about £50pcm from me pcm & I'm really make little use of the HD box other than the few mainstream HD channels

I'm in Glasgow and work in the retail industry.
Freeview HD up here currently has CH4 HD and BBC HD off the Blackhill transmitter .. ITV HD coming soon .. annoying 'cos if you type in the postcode on the Freeview HD website it says we definately should be getting ITV HD , much to the annoyance of our customers.
Check here: http://www.freeview.co.uk/freeview/HD
With regards the picture quality , having installed the separate Humax HD boxes and Panasonic tvs with HD built in I'd say the quality of picture of the HD channels is excellent, the same in comparison to the Freesat HD , but the quality of Standard definition (purely my opinion mind) is much better than Freesat, which I have always thought to be quite noisy and not that good.. plus no CH5 or Five USA + Fiver on Freesat is pretty poor show imo.

Have a look here to see what channels you'll be able to get in your location.

I don't understand this Freesat nonsense. My parents just paid £400 for a dish installation and £250 for the box. Because they "don't want to have to pay more per month for Sky".

Even when I pointed out on the Sky website that it's a free box, with free installation and you can pay as little as £18 a month, my Dad refused to believe me. You could have Sky for 3 years and still break even on the installation costs.

Don't forget there's Freesat www.freesat.co.uk which is the Freeview channels through a dish

...and there's Freesat www.freesatfromsky.co.uk which is the sky version.

Sky HD for £18 per month?. Where?.

My Humax Freesat HD box cost me £248, the dish was already up there from when we had Sky, so it will be about 14 months to break even and I have dual channel PVR and HD which I would not have had with the basic £18 p/m Sky sub.

That's pretty much where I'm coming from. Already got all the gubbins bolted on the side of the house (unless Sky come & take it away which I gather is unlikely)

£299 now gives a 500GB Humax, looking online. Still only half of Sky's current HD boxes though, which is a shame
