On the BBC message boards there has been a thread running for over two years with most of the contributors against the DOG in the top LH corner of the HD channel and BBC3 and 4
Like them or loathe them?

This is one of my pet peeves. I dislike DOGs, "Coming Next" announcements and banners, credit hijacks and anything else that intrudes on the program that I am watching. The broadcasters always claim that their viewers like all this, but I don´t believe a word of it. If you want to know what channel you are watching, what program you are watching or what is on next, simply hit the Info button.

Agree. I saw this brought up on POV recently, and one of the people behind Blackadder lamented how telly has changed. Saying that something like the end credits of Blackadder II (all different and amusing) could not happen now to the info thingys and w
kers talking over the music. I used to hate when trying to read the credits that they would cut them short or whizz them to a corner of the scren just to tell me some fat lump of a chef/house designer/gardern mangler was on next. I hate how this culture has slimed its way into the way programmes are shown.Famous Graham said:
I always understood they were a copyright/advertisement kind of thing. Like a watermark on a photo.
You are correct in that they are an advertisement............for the channel that has been chosen but they are nothing to do with copyright which needs a 'watermark' as TV is not pirated with DVD's on market stalls....'wanna buy last weeks 'Snog, Marry Avoid'...going cheap?Mr E Driver said:

The guy running the campaign did get as far as having meetings with some of the big companies (BBC, ITV etc). Some of the other smaller channels did make modifications to their DOGS, making them transparent instead of solid etc.
The main argument for there use was due to the multi-channel environment and people channel hopping, so they needed a way to show what channel you were on.

I wrote to ITV as their HD DOG is usually quite noticeable but looking on channel 119 it's not there.

Dear Steve
Thank you for your enquiry regarding the Digital On-screen Graphics (DOGS) on ITV channels.
Along with all other broadcasters, ITV is keen to actively promote and draw attention to our channels on the digital platforms. DOGS quickly identify our channels for viewers who now have scores of channels to choose from.
The logo is normally at the top left or right hand part of the picture to avoid clashing with subtitles or captions and this area of the screen rarely contains sensitive material which could be obscured.
The channel logos, apart from ITV1 HD, are now in colour to ensure our services stand out within a crowded, competitive multichannel market and to create an individual identity for each station. There are no plans to remove them.
We do hope the above information helps to explain the situation.
May I take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to contact us here at ITV as we always welcome viewers’ feedback.
Regards
