As per title smile

Quite handy actually, as I've just finished the book.

Good film, good cast. Ford, Willem Dafoe, James Earl Jones, and an English actor playing the President of the United States!

As usual with Tom Clancy film adaptations, the book is better, and with a markedly different ending to the film, but the movie is a good watch.

Shame they cut and twisted it a lot, Cutter never gets what's coming to him and we don't get the SAR/BlackHawk rescue at night with the mini-guns but not a bad flick never the less.

I happen to be reading the Debt of Honour/Executive Orders pair at the moment, shame they'll never get put onto film after 911 but they really never would be as good and there is rather a lot going on in them.

They are a superb series of books.

But I far prefer the books to the films...

Sum of all Fears was supposed to be the start of a new Trilogy for Ryan with Debt of Honour and Executive Orders the next two to be shot back to back with Affleck in the role but Clancy didn't like it and then 911 but a stopper on the whole thing anway, America isn't going to be ready for that storyline for quite a long time, if ever.

He's a great teller of stories when it comes to the technical bits some of the emotional stuff isn't so great and he has a tendance to overcomplicate things (there are rather too many people trying to kill Jack Ryan in Executive Orders) and it's very much a black and white world that ol'Jack lives in too, nobody is that good and honest in real life!

Still a great read, try Red Storm Rising if you get bored of Jack.

Red Storm Rising is my favorite book one which will never make it to a move because of the scope biggrin

As I understand it Clancy was going through a really messy divorce during his writing of executive orders hence its a bit strange compared to the other books.

Now it looks like Jack Ryan jr is going to take over from his dad and go after international terrorists biggrin

+1. I was recommended this book by an RAF navigator I knew, back in 1988, before I'd even heard of Tom Clancy. Co-written with Larry Bond, it's basically Cold-War becomes WW3 from various viewpoints; Abrams tank crew in Europe, USN FFG frigate in the North Atlantic, A10 pilots etc. As well as meticulously researched combat setpieces (you just know that all the R/T calls and exchanges in the combat operations centres on the warships will be spot-on), there is a proper 'back story' as to why WW3 in Europe came about, with the usual Clancy trademark depth.

I read Hunt for Red October immediately after Red Storm, then grabbed a copy of 'Harpoon' for the PC and fought the Battle for the North Atlantic all over again on the computer. Harpoon's old hat now, but the naval combat sims by Sonalysts are excellent. Had 688i Attack Sub years ago, but have recently bought Sub Command and Dangerous Waters for some sonar pinging and gratuitous Tomahawk attacks on land targets.

Red Rabbit, Teeth of the Tiger
never could get into those

as an alternative, has anybody read Patrick Robinson ?
Kilo Class and Nimitz Class both very good books, in a similar theme to Clancy

oh harpoon re-bought it a couple of years ago with all the add-ons best game ever made! Apparently was used at the US Naval academy to train them on tactics etc..

I have a copy on my pc at work when I am really busy biggrin

just need to get it working on an ipad and I am in heaven hehe

More to the point where's the movie adaptation of Rainbow Six - the best Clancy novel IMHO.

Ludicrous, overblown, action-packed, awesome wink

Clear & Present Danger was the first Clancy book I've read, and I only finished it a couple of weeks ago. I'll be honest, I was expecting a brain-out, action thriller and while there IS a lot of action in it, it is also surprisingly intelligent considering the genre, with some very apt political and moral issues being touched on.

It also appears to be very well researched, and a lot of attention is paid to details. The characters as well, are all given a chance to develop which again, is relatively unusual for the genre.

Love it, once I finish my current book, I'll be back with another Clancy novel smile

Without remorse is my favourite without a shadow of a doubt, Clarks back story is awesome!

I have read all of the series, all worthy of a read, red storm rising is a great stand alone read.

The new one do not hold the same appeal as the Jack ryan series for me.
