The original Comet 1 was quite a small aeroplane (capacity 50 passengers) and had, by later standards, quite weedy engines - four De Havilland Ghosts pushing out around 5,000 lbs of thrust each. The top speed of the Comet 1 was in the region of 500 mph.
Modern airliners are not a great deal faster but they are, of course, often much bigger and have far more fuel efficient engines. A modern big fan engine such as the Rolls Royce Trent can produce will over 70,000 lbs of thrust.
