Nuclear Submarine

new series on BBC2, and episode1 was about the new Astute Class nuclear submarine
very good programme, which show the Beeb can still produce good documentaries

so in recent months, i have been pleased with Wonders of the Solar System & How to Build...
but two good series still doesn't justify the tv licence

There seem to be a lot of females coming through electrical and electronic apprentices I have noticed in the past few years.

Is it just I seem to ignore those who are men, as the women stand out like a sore thumb.

You really thought that it was good?

I gave up after 15 minutes because I hadn't *learned* anything. When will programme makers give up on the "human interest" angle and trust us to get excited about the actual facts of the matter...

They even overlaid "plinky plonky computery music" over the highly stylised shots of the design office, ffs. They seemed to be modelling distortions of the hull, but of course we couldn't be trusted with the facts of why or how. Instead, we were merely left to look at the pretty pictures...

A good show but the one complaint I have about it was why did they feel the need to keep chopping backwards and forwards in the construction of it, they would mention something, nip off to look at something else then come back and finish the first part of the installation.

Couldn't help but notice that female electrician though, I wish electricians looked like that on the building sites I work on!

She certainly was, er, "well qualified".

I got bored eventually, it was only the female sparky that made it watchable.

It was filmed a bit too much like those "How it's made" or "How do they do that" programs you get on Five.

Why do i get the feeling that there was only about 5mins of footage left after the censors had been through it, and even then some bits were carefully "blurred out", like the details of the pressure hull construciton as we saw the command module getting slotted into place.

They also kinda failed to mention the fact that the first built boat was 57 months late and 50% over budget!!! oops!

They did mention that Astute was four years late and £800 million over budget, so that aspect was covered. Not like BAE to slip up on time and cost targets at all, oh no...............

I'm not sure about that, those show on Five have facts in them, this had an interview with a welder's mum.

Why do you never get an electrician like that?

It felt like it had been made in the 70s to be shown at primary school.

You do.

In the past few years most of the female apprentices have been lookers. Looks good for equal opportunities and also looks good for the lads.

When Lafarge was being built there were 2 apprentices, both female and both lookers.

I was watching it and thought I was quite interested, but the phone rang and I didn't miss the last ten minutes at all, so maybe it wasn't all that. Possibly a bit too dumbed-down, but I'll let them off the "human interest" angle this time.. hehe

I used to work there before moving on to things that fly rather than float. I thought it was pretty good, and it conveyed what Barrow is all about, a community that happens to build boats.

It's always going to be difficult getting the right balance, but I thought they did ok within the confines of the subject matter. Boats are a sneaky, secretive subject at the best of times, so you're never going to get the all juicy bits.

Bit lacking in detail that bit wasn't it? It was late (and not by that much) for a number of very good reasons, many of which were well outside the influence of BAE Systems. And to be honest, that goes for all defence contracts, not just Astute.

What is important is that the RN has a superbly package with no equalsmile

The problem is that all the stuff that most PH'ers would be interested in is pretty much slapped with a restricted or above classification. Personally I was amazed that you actually got to see some of the NSRP (reactor).

Let's face it, most of us are interested in how fast it goes, how deep it dives, what will it do when it's finished mister - the top trumps stuff. How does it compare to contemporary boast from other nations? The interesting information is classified.

I quite enjoyed it. I'm sure FOSM will be happy with his new toys. That fin still looks very Russian though hehe

I felt it was rather light on detail but if I'm honest I'm not suprised, trying to do an in depth documentary on a highly classified piece of brand new military hardware is something of a losing battle methinks.
