New Sky customer - do I really need a phone line connected
Discussion
So looking to have Sky installed at my new house, however, Sky seem to insist I have a fixed phoneline for them to plug the box into at the install.
Is this really needed? I guess it is used for interactive stuff and Pay Per View stuff, but apart from that, what else might it be needed for?
Would I be correct to assume the service will work perfectly fine without a phone line connected?
The issues with the phone line is that is a big job to have it moved/extended to reach the point where the sky boxes will be plugged in. If its a MUST, then I can do it, but wanted your advice on it first.
Also, had a BT chap round today to add a new phone line in, and he suggested two things:
1) Just run an extension inside the house for the purpose of the install (advise sky that it is being fitted to the wall later that week), then remove it once they have gone.
2) He said sometimes Sky will offer to not require a phoneline for the first 12 months if you pay a one off charge, of around £15.
So, advice and suggestions?

If you get multi room you must have all the boxes plugged in to the same extension, this is to stop people getting cheap sky. I had it in my last house and they sent snotty letters saying it wasn't plugged in which I ignored. They then threatened to charge me for sky twice (once for each card) unless I plugged it in. I checked and whilst downstairs wasn't plugged in, upstairs was. So I plugged in downstairs and everyone happy.
Er no. It turns out sodding little mice had been having a munch at my expense and the cable upstairs was chewed all the way through.
Have moved now and not got multi room but be warned, they will eventually charge you for each card separately if you don't have them plugged in. And they are within their rights to do so.

I think with the phone line connected they can "manage" the Sky+ box. When a freind of ours cancelled his subscription - the box was wiped clean before he had put the phone down!
Not true. If your friend cancelled his sub then a message is sent via sat which stopped him from accessing recorded content as the Sky+ functionality isn't being paid for.The phone line is for Box Office, interactive services etc. The box does a call back every month to verify it is where the contract says it should be. This is to make it difficult to use the box abroad as Sky are only allowed to broadcast in the UK.
Cheers for the feedback guys, so I just got off the phone with them.
Ordered a multiroom package.
When I asked they guy about needing a phoneline, and that the box will be in a different location to the phone sockets, he said that was fine, they only need to plug it in to activate the box - so lets see what happens on the install now!
I did ask a few times, but he said it didnt need to be plugged in constantly, just for activation.

Multiroom they tend to care more about, it's a location check to ensure it's still in the same house and that you've not put it in your holiday home, or let a mate get your full package for £10 a month.
The T&Cs require you to keep the boxes plugged into the phoneline so that the check keeps working. Standard boxes they care a bit less about but it's required for the first year.

My parents (who we're living with right now whilst our house sale progresses..) don't even have a phone line! Does this mean they'd not be eligable for SKY?
In theory they are not entitled to the free box which sky give their new customers. They would have to pay the full cost of the box but could still get sky.Gassing Station | TV, Film, Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
