Any see this on channel 4?

Sarah Beeny and her husband bought Rise Hall a while back, a 200yr old 96 room stately pile in need of restoration. When you hear they only paid £450,000 for it you can imagine the state it's in. A 2 year multi-million pound restoration would be ideal but they don't have that kind of money but they plan to bring it back to life to host weddings in just 8 months. Dry rot, damp, new roof, rotten windows and a multitude of other horrors to be found.

Or part financing it through a TV programme and/or going to cash in on the market exposure from the show.

watched the first half of the prog and fell asleep. Such a pity that someone who appears to be fairly well educated would countenance a website with so many grammatical errors in its blurb. Thermos's indeed!

Shes great! Even with her funny lip and seemingly never ending sprog production line.

Very interesting. Thats one hell'ov'alotta house for the money - but when she mentioned the roof at the front alone cost 100K+ to sort out, and over £140K to replace all the sash windows it kind of puts things into perspective.

shes got a filthy laugh too.

Yup, a goodly pile for the money, though I wonder what sort of restraints (if any) are on the property. I only say this as it did seem very cheap, regardless of money needing to be spent on renovation.
What I could not understand; they have been there a fair while yet allowed dry/wet rot to grow without any treatment. A quick dowsing with bleach would have killed it stone dead, or was this for the benefit of the viewers?

Mind, the programme will be a great add for the wedding business that they are planning. Bundles of dosh to be made there!

I really enjoyed it and wish I had the balls to do something similar. I guess it's one of those things where you spend what you need to get the weddings sorted, you can always go back revisit the other bits as cash starts to flow in. I'm looking forward to the next one.

I liked the fact that the brother had read the rule about ridiculous names and comedy facial hair!

I've not seen this yet, but my process would be:

Buy pile for a song.
Make it water tight, and structurally sound.
Sell it onto a hotel chain that does weddings to fit out how they want it.

Trouser the cash.

Then again, I'm not looking to start a wedding business, or make a TV program...

She got that lip from having a pencil/cigarette in her mouth all the time when she was developing i gather.

If you were married to Beeny, you'd be banging it til the cows came home, although i would use contraception as 2 kids is company, 3 is enough!

Yes, it is grade two listed. Have just read an article/interview in Yorkshire Life where SB was saying that having purchased the property ten years ago, it was too far east to be converted into an hotel. It was also considered not appropriate to be converted into flats. She went on to say that having a singles website (mysinglefriend.com) gave her the idea to use the property as a wedding venue. Evidently, ten years ago East Yorkshire was undiscovered as a 'property-hot-spot' but now the secret is out (raises eyes).
I guess this is the reason for being so cheap at the time of purchase.

Nope, the reason it was remotely cheap was that it was absolutely knackered, in pretty much the state you saw at the beginning of the TV show. Peeling paint, rotting timbers. And it had been on the market for a few years before she bought it (I went for a quick nosey round wayyyy back when).

Purchase price is only a tiny part of thinking about buying a property - the renovation costs there would have scared the bejesus out of most sensible folks biggrin

Oddly enough, the series makes it a lot easier to get in touch with them, which I wanted to do to see if they'd be OK with me fishing a few crayfish out of one of the ponds, being five mins down the road from me.

Still too close to Hull for my liking.

I noticed it was produced by "Knockers Productions".

Nothing better than a woman with big bazongas who's proud of them.

The house was that price because it effectively needs £2m spending on it to get it into decent order. Despite it being a 'stately pile', there are few people in that part of the world willing to stump up much more than the refurb cost.

It's not in the no mans land between Hull and Withernsea that I thought it was originally, but still a limited market. There's a lot you can get for your money around there.

Llowellyn-Bowen did a similar thing. Buy an old pile then had a series watching him do it up. Was quite interesting, seems to be a fairly sensible family and he was having to do lots to finance it.

8months? there is no way they completed that in 8 months without a small army of tradesmen.

i found the program a bit annoying really as a proper inisight into the craftsmanship required to renovate a stately home would be interesting. instead we get a load of beeny brand building and before and after shots [i.e. painting the room without showing any of the work beforehand].

i also found the 'we really can't afford to do this' a bit trite.

i'm not far, i may go round and spray cockpissbeeny on the door.
