I remember reading an old interview with Peter Yates, where he was praising Steve McQueens ability behind the wheel, despite being scared witless on one occasion. During filming of one of the chase scenes on the SF streets, Yates was lying in the back of the Mustang directing from there!! and called out to McQueen that he can slow down now as they'd run out of film...
McQueen was laughing, saying that wasn't the only thing they'd run out of, as he was all out of brakes...... but he was able to slow the Mustang up sufficiently using engine/gearbox, much to Yates's relief.

Bullitt is a fantastic film - so much more than 'the car chase' !

Sad news. He also directed 'Robbery' the year before (starring Stanley Baker, Barry Foster and Frank Finley amongst others), on the strength of which McQueen asked him to do Bullitt.

And which has, in my opinion, the better car chase. Stripped of Hollywood glitz with a more plausible conclusion given the likely results of high speed driving in an urban environment
