I'm no fan of Gervais but I do like the idea that he annoyed the organisers so much that they hauled him off stage for an hour mid show. Harvey Weinstein apparently said

"There are seven people that we've hired to kill him and deservedly so. Knowing that Ricky Gervais will never work again means a lot to me, I'm going to make sure of it,"

Ouch.

Here's a selection of his more controversial jokes:

On multi-millionaire Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg: "Heather Mills calls him the one that got away."

"It was a big year for 3D movies. Toy Story, Despicable Me, Tron. It seems like everything this year was three-dimensional, except the characters in The Tourist. I already feel bad about that joke. I'm jumping on the bandwagon, because I haven't even seen The Tourist. Who has?
I'd like to quash the rumours that the only reason The Tourist was nominated was so that the Hollywood Foreign Press can hang out with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. That is rubbish, that is not the only reason - they also accepted bribes.

"I Love You Phillip Morris stars Jim Carey and Ewan McGregor - two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay. So, the complete opposite of some famous scientologists. Probably. My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke."

"I was sure the Golden Globe for special effects would go to the team that airbrushed [the Sex and the City 2] poster. Girls, we know how old you are. I saw one of you in an episode of Bonanza."

On Jennifer Lopez - "She's just Jenny from the block. If the block in question is that one on Rodeo Drive between Cartier and Prada."

While introducing Robert Downey Jr - "Many of you in this room probably know him best from such facilities as the Betty Ford Clinic and Los Angeles County Jail."

Some parts are funny, some bits had me cringing though.

Awards shows are pretty boring so why not?

I doubt he's that fussed either way.

Organisers invite a comedian who is known for being abrasive and are then shocked when he's abrasive silly

Robert de Niro enjoyed it, he even joined in panning his own film Little Fockers saying "I was very, very moved and gratified when you made the announcement two months ago, well before you had the chance to review "Little Fockers".

Good. I've waiting for that vain, unfunny, smug tt to put his foot in it for years. Hopefully the phrase "You'll never eat lunch this town again," will be ringing in his ears.
Only trouble is it means that he'll drift back here and come up with another way to a smug, vain, unfunny tt on our screens.rolleyes

As if he gives a st that a few vain celebs got offended by what he said. Anyway somebody needed to do it, these are people that are just crying out to be made fun of.

Ironically, the quotes in the OP are just about the funniest things I've heard him say. Just possibly unwelcome at a massive kissy-kissy fest.

With this type of show, do they not proof read his script before he performs/presents/hosts ?

Im sure they already approved his "off the cuff" remarks before he went on. The celebs involved would think nothing of legal action if it was slanderous.

So im sure he will contine to host, and continue to "upset" the celebs.

He talked about a more offensive entrance.

Shame they didn't OK it. Haha.

Edit:

Here's the golden globes without any of the boring award bits:

Am I the only one who doesn't 'get' Gervais ?
I cannot see anything amusing about him at all.
The Office was a big yawn, I tried but failed to see anything funny in it.
It seems his only talent is to hurl insults at people.
If he doesn't work again, I'll not miss him.

No, but you're in a small minority for sure.
He's one of the most talented comedians ever, imo. Purely on his range.
He can write a killer show, movie or stand up routine.
