Why is that when I rewind my DVD of Inglouroius Basterds not only does the sound not play (as you'd expect) but the subtitles disappear as well?

Just to clarify, when I watch the picture in reverse, the picture is totally normal except for the lack of subtitles.

Watch it in a mirror. I wonder if the subtitles will appear in the reflection.

Or maybe your TV is one of those Vampire Sets.

Dull answer - the subtitles are on a separate layer to the video, and the video contains cue-points for the beginning of the point where a subtitle is required (this is so you can have one video with multiple language subtitles).

Imagine this is the time line, and Sx represents when subtitles are required:

|-------S1-------------S2------S3-------|

When playing forwards - left to right - the player arrives at S1 and shows the first subtitle (which stays on screen for say, 2 seconds), but rewinding means it's going right to left, so when it arrives at S1, it is effectively at the end of the subtitle, so it's useless.
