Anybody else seen it? The one with the Japanese fella telling us about how they're going to change motoring their way.

Not an award winning advert, but I didn't realise that Mazda had won Le Mans with its Rotary engine.

Keeps banging on about rotary engines, but I thought they never really perfected it and have/about to drop them all together ?

Yes, they did win with the 787B in 1991. Johnny Herbert, Volker Weidler and Bertrand Gachot (the one who got arrested allowing Schumacher to drive for Jordan in the same year).

What confuses me with it, is that the guy keeps talking about fuel efficiency and rotary engines. Isn't the RX8 - the last noteworthy production wankel engine from Mazda absolutely appalling on fuel consumption?!

Indeed, the rotary is not the most efficient, however they are persuing the tech. Mazda's upcoming generation of Sky-G engines are feted to be uber efficient - Mazda are going with a lightweight car requiring less power angle, hence more efficiency.

I am glad to see the manufacturers all taking different angles of attack on the fuel efficiency front, so I am very much looking forward to this new series of rotary units (with the lightweight cars).

That's what I couldn't quite be certain about. Were they suggesting that the next rotary is just around the corner, or just a general zoom-zoom message that their cars are getting more fuel efficient?
I suspect the former and if so, what will the car be like that they introduce it with.
My Japanese is a bit rusty, so reading the subtitles meant I couldn't really focus on the images they were showing. I suspect they may hold a clue.

Thier is a new car shown on the advert, that looks well pretty awesome, could that be the new rx? could the new rotary engine have average or better fuel effiency without having to resort to hybriding? I hope so.

Mazdas newest R.E. was set to rival MPG of conventional piston engines a few years ago... then emmissions restrictions kyboshed it.

They're just one company developing an Austrian Blokes Brainchild...

I didn't read it as an announcement of a new rotary engine, more an illustration of the way their engineers worked - "Look how we persevered with the rotary - When they said it was not practical, we won LeMans"
So they would now approach the tricky 'power v economy' problem in the same manner

Is this the ad that talks about the 'Hiroshima Spirit'?. I found that quote to be a bit odd.

I think they are trying to find a way of saying Dunkirk spirit. To me though, Hiroshima implies that no matter how strong the will, sometimes external events can totally overwhelm things.
