I presume a few extreme Irish nationalists would kill the Queen during her visit to Ireland if they could.

What would they hope to achieve by this? Surely unification of Ireland and NI would be less likely/ further delayed by such an event?

What would actually happen? The gloves would come off and the British and Irish secret service would cooperate to put these extremists down?

Considering they killed her uncle (I think) Lord Montbatten and the gloves did not appear to come off then.

Very difficult for the 'gloves to come off' given these extremists don't really have a state apparatus behind them. Who do you go after? Who do threaten to 'bomb to the stone age' if they don't co-operate?

Anyway, I think this thread has probably caught the attention of whoever is currently working to protect HM during this trip smile

Prince Charles would become King.

Aside from that I think the current lot in power are too wet to do anything.

Doubt it, minors are one thing. Liz has been on the throne for a LONG time and there are a large number who have sworn allegiance to her.

It would be disastrous for their cause and the entire island of Ireland would turn against them.

I cannot see this happening the SAS MI5 policy and army are all doing their best to check everything is as safe as it physically can be.

clearly you could have a suicide bomber - but I would imagine SAS etc would without question bungle that person and die in the line of service, while the body guards etc would ensure that they get between any bomb and the Queen.
Basically they would stop it at all costs as you would expect them to do.

Clearly they must know the general types to be looking for - but of course you could have someone totally unconnected and "normal" who for some unknown reason flips and does it all by themselves. Fewer people involved less chance of getting caught one would think. If it were 1 sole person who had no unusual history and was just normal they must be the hardest to catch. (I guess thats where the public come into help if they notice changes in people then it could be nothing but what if its not - as per the radio adverts.).

Anyway cannot see them doing anything, they would be insane to attempt it, derail everything that has been achieved in fact it would swing public sentiment and as unlikely as it sounds it could cause the reunification. You could say given their economic situation the reunification would be their best outcome (as remainde of UK would help bail them out).

Kudos

That would have been College Green - but they missed their opportunity yesterday when she visited Trinity College.

I think you under estimate the MI5/6 and SAS etc.
There is no doubt that the planning of this visit has been thought out to the smallest detail.

All plausable scenarios would have been considered and a plan of action to counter it/mitiagte it.

If you think that this hasnt then Im afraid you are somewhat naive.
Sure every possible situation cannot be looked at but known attack types/styles & history would all have been reviewed.
Clearly an Apache would be difficult to defend against from the ground with its 10,000 rounds a minute and rocket launching abilities, however that would have been picked up on the radar and no doubt equivalent defences would have been set up more so fighter jets would have been scrambled (or are in the air constantly) to destroy enemy attack attempt - again it would be at all costs. nothing would be left to challenge.

I would imagine there is a Jack Bauer & some equivalents fully involved in all these matters - there will be those who have been under cover for decades fully ready to stop anything again at all cost.

Don't exclude the Irish security forces in all this too. There are far more of them on the ground this week and they have nearly 40 years experience.

At a guess.... I would think that Sinn Fein would view an action of that sort extremely negatively. On the assumption that the responsible dissident faction would be known to the former PIRA ASUs, then........then what ? A short but terminal clash presumably. I can't see ex-PIRA members working with NI Police or Republic's Garda against former colleagues, but what do I know, maybe it's come to that.

Would that kind of act destabilise the Stormont Government ? No, probably not. But the intense pressure on nationalists would be unwelcome, so I would assume a quick resolution, in Sinn Fein's own interests.
