New York has apparently banned smoking in public outdoor places such as beaches and parks.

I'm all in favour of the current ban on smoking in enclosed public places, but this just seems utterly absurd!

Not the first time they have done this, at the beginning of the 20th century it was illegal for Women to smoke in Public.

The tobacco industry organised smoke ins and had Women light up during the St Patricks day Parade. Job done law repealed.

I Suspect this will go the same way, typical nanny state approach infinging on peoples right to choose smile
I dunno about that, Guam. People are already banned from smoking in the grounds of my local hospitals. Even outside. So, why not a blanket ban? Smokers are in retreat and I can't see the pressure letting off any time soon.

It's enough to turn people to drink.

Continue smoking and the odds are that you'll spend even more time in hospitals.

When I was a smoker I used always get out of the way of everyone to smoke. I knew how much it annoyed people to be sucking on my second hand smoke so I tried to limit it as much as possible. I would never smoke on a beach if near people and then I would always take my butts with me. These laws just seem to be in place of common courtesy and shouldn't be needed but apparently they are.

As for enforcing the law, Time square has hundreds of cops always there and you should remember that beaches in America come with their own armed police.

Having said all that I do find myself following smokers as I still love the smell.

You're absolutely right! Why should I be dictated to about where I throw my rubbish and where I go to the toilet? I might start doing these things wherever I want!

Years ago everyone was laughing at the smoking bans that came in the US for indoor establishments stating that they'd never come to the UK because they weould be enforceable hehe

This is great news, give it 2-3 years and everyone will be wondering what all the fuss was about. Good news smile

Oh give it a rest this is Out doors not indoors, driving your car on the roads impinges on the rights of non drivers where does this nonsense end?

Typical of the Anti Smoking Fascists to come up with bks like that!
Trouble is that bars and pubs are much nicer places to be these days since the smoking ban.

With my devil's advocate hat on.....

Anyone seen the outsides of pubs these days? Fag ends everywhere. And lets face it, when smokers can't be bothered to put their fag ends in the bin, why shouldn't it be banned in public places?

I'm not a proper smoker, but I don't/wouldn't support these bans.

Nightclubs now smell of body odour rather than cigarettes. I'm not particularly a fan of either smell but I'd take cigarettes every time.

I can no longer relax in my local by the fire with a few chums who want to smoke nice cigar, which added to the atmosphere.

Banning smoking outdoors, even in public places, is a step too far.

Oh hell yes.

Coney Island!

Ride the D train all the way out there. It's even fun in midwinter when it's completely abandoned.

Bsmile Cig Ends are Biodegradable first time it rains they are gone, the only Eco friendly litter out there, all the crap the holier than thou anti smoking brigade drop into the bins will still be in land fill in centuries, fag ends are gone in under a week usually.
Just because something washes away doesn't mean its biodegradable. laugh They still end up somewhere else you know.

Edit: fag butts don't decompose within a week, do they? confused

Anyway, I guess its a small step in the process of completely banning smoking. The bottom line is that smoking is hardly a 'modern values' thing. Everything about it reeks of old fashioned values and its not hard to imagine a day where the sight of someone smoking will be an odd one.

I don't think it should be banned though.... cos I like the odd cig and I don't wanna be stopped biggrin

Really? I'm surprised, what's wrong with you? Very few conditions where not stopping smoking wont be extremely beneficial, especially in a man under 65 which I assume you are.
