You are fined five credits for violations of the verbal code
Discussion
Looks like swearing in public will now be attracting an £80 fine . . . . Give it a couple of years and we'll all be eating at Taco Bell, wearing Pyjamas and singing the Oscar Meier wiener song.

If the member of the public is heard to swear and the profanity is judged to be potentially causing offence or intimidation, the officers have been told to intervene.
The first option is simply to tell the individual to moderate his or her language but if that is unsuccessful, the officer can fine the person a maximum of £80.
So someone swears in public, an officer hears it and comes over to request the person to not do it again because there are kids or families around. Seems fair enough to me.The first option is simply to tell the individual to moderate his or her language but if that is unsuccessful, the officer can fine the person a maximum of £80.
I cannot see a problem with this except that it will escalate if those guilty do not shut up. We have seen a general decline in what is acceptable in the open and now small kids think it is okay to swear at and in front of others. How many on here who will condone it as a matter of choice would use such words in front of thier parents, or chastise their kids if they used that lanugage at home?
If they extend this to pukeing after too much beer, dropping chewing gum I will be all for it.

It isn't a new law, and the article is wrong to suggest that it is a crime to swear in public. Breach of the peace does not cover this kind of behaviour:
Public Order Act said:
A person is guilty of an offence if he—
(a)uses threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, or disorderly behaviour, or
(b)displays any writing, sign or other visible representation which is threatening, abusive or insulting,
within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress thereby.
I.e. a lot more than just swearing in public. A complete non-story but obviously gained the desired reaction in some readers...(a)uses threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, or disorderly behaviour, or
(b)displays any writing, sign or other visible representation which is threatening, abusive or insulting,
within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress thereby.

Me, also.Oh, mrs k & I swear profusely in public places but it's always hushed and between ourselves (e.g. do they not realise how f

Eh? Section 5 of the public order act has been around since 1986. How does this differ?
EDIT - clearly nothing - it isn't specified but it is apparently the legislation they are wheeling this out under..
Sections 4, 4a and 5 of the public order act are routinely used to deal with gobby muppets in the 'night-time economy' - admittedly usually only after extensive warnings and being told ' clear off' , 'go home' , 'go home or i'll nick you', 'ok then, i'm warning under s5 Public order' , ' that's it i've given loads of opportuniities to clear off , you're nicked section 5 public order, you are now under arrest .... ' having spent several years working in A+E depts and doing alternatives to 999 in a town centre , the same olsd stroy is played out again and again and again ... EDIT - clearly nothing - it isn't specified but it is apparently the legislation they are wheeling this out under..

Then again. Given that you were dealing with someone who thinks it's alright to cuss and swear, mindless of those around, that might be the least of it
