"But with one in five young people now looking for work - that's almost one million - 'Britain's Lost Talent' looks a better label for where our country could be headed."

He said April's fall in the youth unemployment numbers was "welcome" but questioned whether the trend would continue.
After 13 years of Labour, it can only be their fault that 1 in 5 young people are looking for work.

Youth unemployment fell in April, which can mostly be considered a result of coalition policies, surely?

It's not just a generation of people with little understanding of the need to work, it's also a generation of people who lack the discipline and common sense to be an effective part of the work force, coupled with hundreds of thousands who have had a "university" education, in subjects with little hope of employment, when they would have been far better suited to some sort of vocational apprenticeship.

Try taking on people fresh out of university / under 22 and see how much management input / training they need, even for the most mundane of tasks

Like even making the tea, according to someone we know.

The other issue of course is, how come there are so many young eastern Europeans here working?

I think the "lost generation" syndrome predates the last Labour government by at least 20 years.

"Mr Balls writes "Millions of us watched some exceptionally talented young people in the final of Britain's Got Talent."

A potential winner for the 2011 populist drivel awards. It's like he's void of all embarrasment.

Unfortunate that he can't conjure up anything beyond the predictable 'tax the bank' crap though.

Because they want to work, many of UK unemployed either don't want to or need to, eg. -

i/- don't want to work, get by on handouts.
ii/- work/trade and sign-on.
iii/- commit crimes/deal drugs and sign-on.
iv/- single mums churn out babies, get housed and child benefits etc.

PLUS - i to iv are all Labour voters!!

Personally, yes.

Assume for the moment that you have no shame, no aspriations, no need for anything apart from the roof over your head, and a bit of spending money for the pub.

And all you have to do is vote for the government to keep this coming, once every 4 years.

If I were that way inclined, and all I had to do was "work" for a few minutes every 4 years or so, it would be easy.

No doubt some do. But on the whole, my impression is that the only voting the feckless get involved in is voting for "X-Factor" contestants.

I had contacts with people like that when the last election was held, and none of them showed the slightest interest in politics whatsoever and none of them voted.

So based on both your previous comments, who on earth is voting to keep these cretins in the lifestyle that they are so accustomed?

TBH I'm bored of knocking Labour. Yes, they fked up the country. Now what can we do to sort it out? How can we get these unemployed youths back into work? "Don't pay them benefits" is not the answer - crime will go up as they try to get money from you, and even if you're... powerfully-built... you won't be able to stop a knife going into you if you don't hand over your hard-earned money.

So, what is the solution? I'd like to see the manufacturing/blue collar industry grow massively as not everyone is suited to higher education.

Please don't take offence, but that could have been a sound bite from Sir Oswald Moseley seventy odd years ago.

It just goes to show that this is nothing new.

In my experience it's people who perhaps do work/are in and out of work but are still not 'well off', who feel that they're more likely to end up being unemployed rather than even joining the 'middle class' so are more likely to vote Labour for a generous benefits system than Conservatives, who they feel would make life more difficult for them.
