Entirely manufactured with Gabriel's Theme playing mournfully in the background. All intended to tug heartstrings round the world - even the stage set and posters were in English.

The stage set has the show's logo in English. That is because it is part of the show's licensed format. Take a look on YouTube for "Thailand's got Talent". That set is also in English.

As for the background music at the end, it is also part of the "format". Take a look at Susan Boyle's clip from 2009. Start at 5:50, and you will see that they were using the same technique then. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OcQ9A-5noM&fea...

Why did they all start laughing when he said he was a manual worker, and why was everyone holding giant 70's style microphones?

That's an unhealthy knowledge of "*****'s Got Talent" - do you go to Got Talent Anonymous meetings?

Koreans tend to pepper their popular culture with english language - watch any of the K-Pop bands or other "youth" shows and they use english quite a lot.

Not at all. It took about three minutes using Google.

I've never even watched the show.
