Or to be more accurate:

'Take the train instead, despite the fact that you don't live near a station, there's no station near your destination, it costs too much to be a viable alternative and you've already had to sell a kidney to be able to afford to tax and insure the car you can't realistically do without (see above)'

...but I doubt it would fit on the sign.

Don't they already have signs like that as you approach London anyway? Something about parking and taking the train?

Anyway, it's only advice, you don't have to take it.

This is the sort of bullshyte we have become used to - politicians spouting off without the first idea of how the world really works.

First, as somebody else has said, you need to live within reasonable travelling distance of a station and you need to want to go somewhere within reasonable travelling distsnce of your destination station. Richard Beeching made pretty bloody sure nearly 50 years ago that thees requirments exclude most people who live outside the large urban areas.

In a way I'm fortunate in that I live 10 minutes walk from a station that has a half-hourly service to London, 98 miles and 75 minutes.

If I want to go off peak, a second class day return would cost me £44.00, first class £129.00

If I want to go out and back in the peak, it would cost me £139.00 second class, £219.00 first class.

If there are two or three people travelling, double or treble those figures as appropriate

The diesel to travel 200 miles or so would cost me around £33.00, and four people could sit in comfort in that car (as long as they didn't mind me smoking smile )

Not much competition, is there?

PS - I've recently bought a ticket with BA to Mauritius in December - £400 single, and a good half of that is tax rolleyes

They would do better using the sign to say "your cock won't drop off if you pull into lane 1"
